1000 Most Critical Days

The document discusses the 1000 most critical days (MCDs) period from conception to age 2 years. It outlines key interventions in Zambia during pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood to address malnutrition. These include micronutrient supplementation, promoting breastfeeding and complementary feeding, growth monitoring, and ensuring access to clean water and sanitation. The document also provides recommended practices to support mother and child health and nutrition during each stage of the 1000 MCDs period.

1000 MOST

CRITICAL DAYS

By Mr. Mudenda 2018

Learning Objectives

1. Give an over view of the 1st 1000 MCDs

2. Explain the 1st 1000 MCDs priority
interventions in Zambia
3. Explain the key practices to support
mother and child survival in the 1st 1000
MCDs
Introduction
– According to Zambia Demographic Health
Survey (ZDHS) preliminary reports of 2013/
2014
– Zambia faces high levels of malnutrition
– stunting at 40%
– Underweight 15% and wasting 6 %
INTRODUCTION

• The 1000 MCDs is a global campaign to help

address pediatric malnourishment way from
conception to age
Calculation of the 1000 MCDs
• The 1st 1000 most critical days is the period
from conception to 1st 2 years of life
– 270 days of pregnancy period.
– 365 which is the 1st year of life
– 365 which is another (2nd ) year of life
• 270 + 365 + 365 = 1000 days
Aim of the Campaign
– The campaign aim at reducing under-
nutrition right from conception to two years
of life
Why are the 1st 1000 Days
Critical?
1. The brain achieves its optimum development during
this peak period of growth
2. The earliest experiences shape a baby’s brain
development -have a lifelong impact on that baby’s
mental and emotional health
3. Fetal or baby exposure to toxic stress can have their
responses to stress (cortisol) distorted in later life
Why are the 1st 1000 Days
Critical?
– Lagging behind in the 1st year of life makes it difficult to catch
up latter
– If a baby’s development falls behind the norm during the 1st
year of life, it is then much more likely to fall even further
behind in subsequent years, than to catch up with those who
have had a better start
– Babies are disproportionately vulnerable to abuse and
neglect

– There are key practices that should be
adhered to by individuals and families that
are key for promotion of growth.
