ELECTRICAL SAFETY

While electricity is a boon to modern life there are however electrical hazards that exist in their
use. It is the concern of everyone in the house, office, hospital or workplace to effectively use
electricity without endangering those who uses it. If improperly used, electricity can cause injury
or even death and fires. Severe injuries means loss of time, earnings, and hospitalization costs.
Everyone must therefore be alert and observe necessary precautions to avoid accidents.

Common Uses

 Provides lighting
 Power electrical tools
 Used for cooking
 Used for industrial and home air-conditioning
 Used in communication
 For cleaning and washing
 For entertainment
 For preservation of foods

Electricity when mishandled results in:

 Fires
 Shock
 Injuries and death
 Damage to property

Electrical Fires

 Of four industrial fire, one is of electrical origin


 One third (1/3) of electrical fires are caused by faulty wirings

Defective Electrical Wirings

 Poorly spliced connections


 Insufficient taping of connections
 No provisions for junction boxes at junction point
 Improperly supported wires
 Using poor quality and undersized wires
 Extensive use of extension cords
 Use of improvised supports for wires and conduits
Electrical Cord Safety

 Use the right kind and proper size


 Use water resistant for outdoors
 Inspect cords before using. Send to stores for repair if defective
 Place where this will not be a tripping hazard.
 Must not cross with water puddles, oil, and run near heaters
 Do not drag
 When disconnecting, pull the plug and not the cord

Electrical Tools

 Plan work
 Inspect tools before using. Return to stores for repair if necessary
 Carry tools in safe manner
 Use proper protective equipment as necessary
 Work in well-lighted room
 Use the proper tool for the job.
 Keep guards in place
 Store tools properly when not in use
