Problems:
► 10_8_1: A 200V 875rpm 150A separately excited dc motor has an
armature resistance of 0.06Ω. It is fed from a single phase fully
controlled rectifier with an ac source voltage of 220V 50Hz . Assume
continuous conduction. Find
i. firing angle for rated motor torque and 750 rpm.
ii. firing angle for rated motor torque and -500 rpm
iii. Motor speed for rated motor torque and α= 160º
► For the above problem if armature circuit inductance is 2mH calculate
the torque for(discontinuous conduction problem)
i. α= 120º and speed =-400rpm
ii. α= 120º and speed =-600rpm
Problems:
► 12_8_1:Two independent single phase semi converters are supplying
the armature and field circuits of a separately excited dc motor for
controlling its speed. The firing angle of the converter supplying the
field such that maximum current flows. The machine parameters are
Ra = 0.25Ω and Rf = 147Ω, motor voltage constants are 0.7032 V/A-
rad/sec. The load torque is T= 45 N-m at 1000rpm. The converters
are fed from 208V, 50Hz ac supply, and the friction and windage
losses are neglected. The inductance of armature and field currents
are sufficient to maintain currents constant and ripple free.
Determine a) field current b) delay angle of armature converter c)
The input power factor of armature converters.
Problems:
► A single phase 230V,50Hz supply feeds a separately excited dc motor
through two single phase semi converters, one for field and other for
armature. The firing angle for the semi converter in the field circuit
is zero, the field resistance is 200Ω and the armature resistance is 0.3
Ω. The load torque is 50N-m at 900rpm, the voltage constant is
0.8V/A-rad/s and torque constant is 0.8N-m/A2. Assume that the
armature and field currents are continuous and constant, and
neglecting losses. Find the following.
a) The field current
b) Firing angle of the semi converter in the armature circuit
c) The power factor of semi converter in the armature circuit.
Problems:
► A single phase full wave converter controls the speed of a 10HP,
1500rpm separately excited DC motor. The rated motor current being
18A at a particular load and the armature resistance being 0.3Ω. find
the armature voltage and back EMF if the AC input is 230V and firing
angle α= 450. calculate the firing angle to keep the motor current at
its given value if the polarity of the motor back emf is Reverse it by
reversing field excitation what is the amount of power fed back to the
supply? AC input AC supply to be 220V.
► A separately excited DC motor of 220V,1200rpm,8A has armature
resistance of 0.75Ω. it is fed from a single phase fully controlled
bridge rectifier whose source voltage is 230V,50Hz. Assume load
current to be continuous determine the following.
a) motor speed at α= 450 and torque of 8N-m,
b) Developed Torque at 450 and speed of 800rpm.

Problems:
► 13_8_1:A 220V, 20A, 1500 rpm DC separately excited motor
with Armature Resistance of 0.2Ω is fed from a Three phase
full converter. Available AC source has line voltage of 400V,
50Hz. A star- star connected Transformer is used to feed the
converter. i. Find the Firing angle of the converter when the
motor is running at rated speed and supplying Rated
Torque.(Assume continues conduction mode)
ii. if the motor is Supplying half of the rated torque and it is
running at Half of the Rated speed.
► 13_8_2:The speed of a separately excited DC motor is
controlled by a three phase full converter the converter is fed
from a 3-φ, 400V,50Hz supply. The armature resistance is 0.8Ω
and machine constant is 0.2V/rpm. For a rated current of
160A, find the firing angle for the machine when it is motoring
at rated speed.
