Due to extensive growth within our faculty we are currently recruiting for a number of Trust Grade
Clinical Fellows working at the equivalent of the Senior House Officer grade, to join the
Princess Royal University Hospital (BR6 8ND) based across the main site and sister Orpington
Hospital (BR6 9JU). Successful individuals will join the Acute Medicine Department at the
Princess Royal University Hospital. This gives you an amazing opportunity to take the foundation
medical experience gained into an environment where you can develop your acute care skills.
From August 2020 individuals will have the opportunity to gain more experience in Acute
Medicine or to rotate into other medical specialties.
Acute Medicine at Princess Royal University Hospital supports the admission of all Medical
patients on the Emergency Pathway (the Medical Take), the Acute Medical Unit (56 beds) and
the Ambulatory care Unit. Individuals will get the chance to focus on managing acutely unwell
patients within the first 48 hours of admission and will gain experience of managing a broad range
of medical conditions during the acute phase. Under the supervision of Acute Medicine
Consultants the post-holder will benefit from experience in ambulatory emergency care and will
be able to develop their procedural skills.
This post would be suitable for any trainee who has, or are on course to, successfully complete
a 2-year Foundation School programme or has achieved equivalent competencies who will join
at a Junior Clinical Fellow level. Ideally trainees will have an up to date certification for Adult Life
Support training, or be able to fulfil the necessary qualification upon appointment.
Although this appointment is not accredited for training through HEE, the appointee will be
expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within the department
and the hospital. The Acute Medicine Department has an exciting teaching programme which
includes instruction in skills such as resuscitation, acute ultrasound and lumbar puncture. The
appointee will have a named clinical/ education supervisor. Annual leave and study leave is
commensurate with other post foundation doctors.
The experience and opportunities offered would be excellent experience for applicants planning
a career in any medical specialty. Previous post holders have been successful in gaining entry

to training programmes upon completion as well as completing their Royal College membership
exams.

KING’S COLLEGE HOSPITAL NHS FOUNDATION TRUST EDUCATION PROGRAMME
Although these posts are not approved for training they will provide excellent experience for
general professional training at Core Medical Training Level. All appointees will have a
designated clinical/educational supervisor who they will be expected to meet regularly to support
their professional development.
1. The PGMDE Department is based within the Education Centre at the Princess Royal
University Hospital. The Education Centre also hosts a library and a restaurant. In addition
there is the Education Annex which has a Simulation Suite. Both the Simulation Suite and
Education Centre run a range of courses, teaching sessions, clinical skills practice and
Simulation courses.
2. Weekly Grand Round takes place every Friday from 1pm – 2pm in the Education Centre with
lunch provided.
3. Appointees will be welcome at the Core Medical Training weekly sessions Wednesday or
Thursday 1-2pm and MRCP PACES teaching sessions.
4. The Teaching the Teachers Course run across the Trust would be available to appointees.
5. Study Leave arrangements and funding are available and advice and guidance is available
through the PGMDE department.
Each specialty at King’s has their own educational program for junior staff, including weekly
educational meetings, audit meetings, x-ray meetings etc.

Assessments occur at the beginning of the post and at least once more during, or at the end of
the post.
BACKGROUND
The Trust is now located on multiple sites serving the economically diverse boroughs of
Southwark, Lambeth, Bromley and Bexley. As a major employer with over 11,500 staff based
across 5 main sites in South East London including Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH)

GENERAL
The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of
work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk
management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

All medical staff are expected to comply with and follow the Trust’s infection control policies,
which includes appropriate antibiotic use following the Trust’s antibiotic formulary and
observance of appropriate infection control procedures at all times. Appointees will be trained
and assessed for IV line competencies.
