For this semester’s key assignment, you will work individually. Your will pick a topic
from the list below. Please choose a topic that you find interesting and you feel
passionate about.

Disclaimer:
The list above is not a complete list of social justice problems or topics. You can
choose a problem that isn’t in the list. Just make sure that I approve it.

I. RESEARCH

• Research your topic, become an expert who can’t wait to share your
knowledge.
• You will need to find and use at least 3 sources when doing your research.
• You need to show proof that you used your reading and listening skills when
researching your topic (e.g., you can listen to a podcast, watch a video, read a
scholarly article, etc.)
• Please make sure that the sources you use for your research are credible and
accurate. Try to find content written by experts on your topic.
• You will need to turn in the research worksheet attached in this document.
• Due date: August 12th, 2020

II. WRITING

When you finish with your research, you will need to write a 1-2-page essay. Your
paper will discuss the social justice issue of your choice and solutions on how to end
the problem. Make sure that your essay includes the following:

1. A great title that will catch your audience’s attention.


2. A hook in the first line (Just as your title, a good hook will make your audience
want to read your essay.)
3. Include quotes or data from reliable sources (One or two strong quotes should
be enough for your essay.)
4. Your paper MUST include at least three solutions to end the social justice issue
of your choice in the following contexts:
i. In your school
ii. In your country
iii. In the world
5. A great conclusion. Your concluding statement should not only leave your
audience satisfied with what they read, but also make them curious to learn
more about the topic.
6. A list of your references. (Please make sure to properly cite other’s ideas and
quotes.)

Guidelines:
• Your essay should be 1-2 pages in length, typed in Times New Roman,
Californian FB, Arial, etc., 12pt font, and double spaced.
• Once you have finished your writing, please submit it via Drive where it will
be checked for plagiarism through Safe Assignment.
• Due date: Thursday August 13th, 2020

III. WRITING PART 2 (SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS)

• You will create three Instagram/Facebook posts. (One for each of the solutions
you discussed in your essay.)
• Your Instagram/Facebook posts should look the part. (Remember that you are
an activist who is trying to promote change in your community. Think about
your audience and what would be appealing for them to see and motivate them
to create change.)
• Upload your Instagram/Facebook posts to Google Drive.
• Due date: Monday August 10th, 2020

IV.
SPEAKING
(RECORDED PRESENTATION)

You will present what you learned in your research and your solutions to end the
social justice problem in exactly 2:30 – 3 minutes. You can create a simple Power
Point with the Instagram/Facebook posts you had previously created. Use notecards.
• You will need to submit at least 1 draft of your presentation. (Please record
yourselves and upload your video in the “My Achievements” folder.)
• Your presentation should include:
o A brief description of what your social issue is
o A description of the three solutions that you have proposed to end the
problem in each of the contexts you were assigned to discuss
• Due date: August 13th, 2018
