Drama in Building Students' Character
Drama in Building Students' Character
society are attempting to build a good character as an effort to protect the young generation to
be well-mannered in almost all the aspects of living. Education is seen as one of the way to
reach this goal. Fathur Rokhman, et. al (2006, p. 1161) clarified that “ education has been
might be very broad, but then it has a certain unit to be assisted to take a part. The school
subjects are the answer. Tomas (2014, p. 11) said “drama enables them to use space to
express themselves and work at different paces towards different goals”. Here are 3 reasons
Firstly, drama will help students extent social awareness. Through drama students are
“drama provides a social context within which to observe the possible effects of one’s own
actions and that of others through the buffer of drama – the imaginary social context
(Needlands, 2004; Rohd, 1998; Wagner, 1976)”. It means that drama accomodates students to
experience as well as to understand what will probably others do if they do a certain action in
real life. Bolton as cited in Marie Gervais further explained that “in educational drama the
student has an active identification with the fictional context in addition to experiencing
greater awareness of his/her own personal identification (pp. 182-183)”. It helps them to have
a certain assumption based on what it is drawn in the story and it will definitely make them
think critically and clearly. Tomas (2014, p. 11) said that “critical thinking skills through
Socratic Method taught in schools help creates leaders”. The teacher who use drama in
teaching is acting only as a facilitator. It helps students to build confidence that will lead
them to have a repeatable thought that generates questions then by itself will coming to the
solutions. They will be accustomed into self-governing. All of them are potential to lead the
other in a team. They can share ideas that will lead them work in a harmony.
Additionally, drama give a chance for students to prepare themselves facing the future
life. Tomas (2014, p. 13) declared “drama has the potential to empower the students, give
them many opportunities to have pride in their work, it teaches them responsibility, problem
solving, management and directing proficiencies.” In line with the statement above, indeed
drama is really useful to enable students to learn if they later on have a job and have to make
decision by their own. Moreover if they have a team to work together with, it really teaches
In summary, the field of education played an important role in helping society to build
the characters of the young generation. Drama engages not only emotion, but also thought,
and experiences within a social context that is believed to be very useful for students’ future
life.
