Section 9E: Using z-scores to compare data– 4 new level 3 questions

Question 1

The z-scores for the geography and history exams of Amadeus are -2 and -2.5. The mean score of the class
is 82 for geography and 90 for history and the standard deviation is 3 for geography and 5 for history.

a. In which subject did Amadeus score more marks?

b. In which subject did he score better marks as compared to his class?

Question 2
In a first maths test scored out of 100, the mean score of the class was 85 and the standard deviation was
2.5. Ludwig scored 2 times the standard deviation more than the mean score of the class in this first test.
In a second maths test scored out of 80, the mean score of the class was 65 and the standard deviation was
5. In that test, Ludwig scored 72 out of 80.
In which test, did Ludwig score better, as compared to the whole class?

Question 3
For two tests marked out of 100 each and no negative marking, Wolfgang scored the maximum possible z-
scores each. If the mean of the class is 75 with standard deviation of 5 for the first test 1 and if the mean is
81 with a standard deviation of 4 for the second test, find in which test has Wolfgang scored better as
compared to the class.

Question 4

The scores of Franz for 3 of her subjects are given below. Rank the subjects as per Franz’s scores in the
subject in ascending order of performance.

Worked solutions
Question 1

xg  x g xg  82 xh  xh xh  90
zg    2 zh    2.5
sg 3 sh 5
and
 xh xh  90
xh    2.5  5  90  77.5
xg  2  3  82  76 sh 5
Hence and

a. Amadeus scored more in History than he scored in Geography h g x x 

b. In both cases, Amadeus did worse than the class (z-score < 0). Nevertheless, compared to
the whole class, Amadeus scored better in geography than in history (the smaller the
absolute value of the z-score, the closer the score to the mean).

Question 2
x1  x1 x1  85
z1   2
s1 2.5  x1  85  2  2.5  90 
x2  x2 72  65
z2    1.4
s2 5
90/100 = 72/80 therefore Ludwig did as well in the second test than in the first test but compared to the

class, Ludwig scored better in the first test

 z1  z2 
Question 3
z1 = (100 – 75)/5 = 5
z2 = (100 – 81)/4 = 4.75

As z1 > z2,Wolfgang scored better in test 1 than test 2 when compared to the class.
Question 4
The z-scores of Franz are:
English = 3.5
Science = 3
Info. Tech. = 4

Rank of the subjects: Science < English < Info. Tech.
