“Iceman” Alpine Mummy

Otzi, the iceman, is the modern name of a well-preserved mummy of a man from about 3330 BC (53
centuries ago). The mummy was found in 1991, in a flaker between Austriaand Italy. The nickname
comes from Otztal, the region in which he was discovered. He isEurope’s oldest human mummy.
The body was crudelyremoved from the glacier, usingnon-archaelogical methods and people took
portions of the clothing and tolos assouvenirs. The body has been extensively examined and dated.
Otzi was about 45 years old when hedied. His clothes were sophisticated all made of lather of
different skins. His_ werewaterproof, seemingly designed for walking across the snow. Other ítems
found with theIceman were a copper axe, a flint knife and a quiver whit 14 arrows.

Initially it had been believed that Otzi died from exposure during a winter storm. In 2001 X-rays and
CT scan revealed that Otzi hadan arrowhead lodged in one shoulder when he died. Then researchers
theorized Otzi died of blood loss from the wound. Close examination of the body found bruises and
cuts to the hands and chest and cerebral trauma, so it was believed that death was caused by a blow
to the head. Lately researchers used newly developed medical scanners and determined that the
arrow had torn a hole in an artery leading to a massive loss of blood.

The DNA evidence suggests that he was assisted by companions who were also wounded: pollen
and food analysis suggests that he was out of his home territory. This may indicate that Otzi was
actually part of an armed raiding party involved in a skirmish, perhaps with a neighboring tribe, and
this skirmish had gone badly.
