Index of Refraction

The document reports on an experiment to measure the index of refraction and critical angle of glass. It presents experimental values for the index of refraction from three parts of the experiment, which were close to the actual values with errors between 0.67-1.67%. By plotting the refraction of light through and emerging from the glass, the experiment was able to determine the index of refraction using Snell's law and measuring lengths on a circle diagram. It also measured the critical angle of the glass using a laser pointer to be 42.51 degrees.

1. DATA
The data presented experimental value of index of refraction and critical angle of the glass. For part A,
the length of line GH is 4.1cm and line FL is 6.1cm and the experimental result of index refraction of
glass is 1.49. For part B, the length of line GH is 6.5cm and line FL is 4.4cm and the experimental index
of refraction of glass is 1.48. For part C, the experimental critical angle of the glass resulted 42.51 °. These
experimental values was compared to the actual value resulted into 0.67%, 1.33%, and 1.67% for part A,
B and C respectively.

2. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

The experiment determine the index of refraction of glass by plotting points to illustrate the refraction of
light through the glass. Using the illustration from the experiment the light, presented by the line, was
observe as it passes from the glass to air, plotted from side of glass to another side of the glass and to air.
The circle was set to limit the radius in order to obtain accurate result for index of refraction. Based on the
illustration the points were extended to the circumference of the circle and determine the length from
circumference to the BB’ axis and applying Snell’s law to determine the index of refraction. This is
repeated with an interchanged order of medium, from air to glass, which resulted to same result of index
of refraction but an interchange length for the plotted points. Moreover, to further understand refraction
the angle of light to the medium could be in different way each angle would result to an angle of
refraction that causes by the index of refraction. The experiment utilizes a laser pointer to determine the
critical angle. It is the angle of the light from the medium that resulted to a 90° angle of refraction. The
angle of light to the medium could be in different way each angle would result to an angle of refraction
that causes by the index of refraction.

3. CONCLUSION
The index of refraction affects the light passing through different medium, thus interchanging the
medium’s order would result to the same angle of refraction for each medium. Lastly, the angle of light to
the medium that result to a 90° angle of re4fraction creates relationship called the critical angle
