ARCHITECTURE
CONSERVATION? FIRST UP
CONSULTANTS 2
Architectural conservation is a process that
retains the authentic built form of old buildings
through restoration. In doing so, it serves as an
aid in the preservation of buildings.
Architectural conservation is particularly
impacted by two main aspects, cultural and
historical.
• The cultural aspect involves the
conservation of cultural heritage buildings
in tandem with consideration of the local
customs of an area.
• The historical aspect involves the
conservation of well-known historical
buildings and also considers changes made
over time in building conservation, such as
technological advancements and new
materials.

In order to properly conserve historical buildings and
architecture it is important to have a team of architects at
hand that understand how to process historic building
surveys, putting together investigations of buildings and
looking in-depth at the materials required to build the
structure, as well as the remedial specification. In many
cases historic buildings that are classified as listed can only
be renovated and refurbished in very specific ways, using
certain processes and materials in order to preserve its
status and legitimacy as a listed building

• Heritage gives us a sense of identity
It’s not just about saving buildings made of bricks and mortar, it’s about
saving the layers and layers of information about our ancestors and
where we are from. Without heritage, there would not be any family
history or a culture to identify with!

• Regret only goes one way
The preservation of historic sites is a one-way-street. Once, it’s gone,
there is no chance of saving them. This brings to light the importance of
locating and preserving a building of historic significance because once
a piece of history is lost, it is lost forever.
