the right from left hand bearing and it drives pulley directly below it with a maximum tension of 2.75kN.
Another pulley of diameter 400 mm is placed 200mm to the left of right hand bearing and is driven with a
motor placed horizontally to the right. The angle of contact of the pulley is 180 and µ= 0.3. Find the diameter
of the shaft assume Kb=3.0 Kt=2.5 y = 190 MPa ut = 300MPa .Assume CW rotation
2. A C50 Mn1 steel (y =392.3 MPa, ut = 706.1MPa) shaft transmitting 15Kw at 210 rpm is supported
between two bearings 750mm apart has two gears keyed to it. The pinion having 24 teeth and module 6 mm is
located 100 mm to the left of right bearing. This gear delivers horizontally to the right when viewed from left
hand bearing. The gear having 80 teeth of modulus 6mm is located 150mm to the right of left bearing and
receives from a pinion in averticle direction from below. Take Kb=1.75, Kt=1.25, = 18. Consider the key
effect. Assume CCW rotation
3. A horizontal piece of commercial shafting is supported by two bearings 1.5m apart. A keyed gear 20
involute and 175 mm in diameter is located to the 400mm to the left of right bearing and is driven by a gear
directly behind it. A 600 mm diameter pulley is keyed to the shaft 600mm to the right of left bearing and drives
a pulley with a horizontal belt directly behind it. The ration of tensions of the belt is 3:1, with the slack side on
top. The drive transmits 45kW at 330 rpm. Take Kb=Kt= 1.5. Calculate the diameter of the shaft, take
allowable shear stress as 40MPa.
4. Design the shaft of the armature of a motor, if the magnetic pull on the shaft is equivalent to an uniformly
distributed load of 10N per mm length over the middle one third of the 600mm length of the shaft between the
bearings. The motor transmits a power of 15kW at 1200 rpm. The allowable shear stress 50MPa take kb=1.5,
Kt=1.25.
5. A horizontal counter shaft running at 500rpm is supported on bearings 1m apart. A pulley of 0.5m diameter
is located 0.5 m to the right of left bearing and receives 10kW of power by a horizontal belt drive directly
behind it. The ratio of tensions in the belt is 2:1 with the slack side on top and angle of lap is 180. A 20
involute spur gear of 0.2 m pitch circle diameter is keyed to the shaft 0.2 m to the right of right bearing and
transmit power to another gear. The line od centers of the gear pair makes an angle of 30 above horizontal. The
weight of the pulley and pinion are 500N and 200N respectively. Determine diameter of shaft assuming steady
lod and allowable sher stress is limited to 40MPa.
6. Design a solid marine type flange coupling to transmit 2MW power at 100 rpm. The allowable shear stress
in shaft and bolts may be taken as 50MPa and 40MPa respectively.
7.Design a rigid flange coupling to transmit 18kW at 1440 rpm. The allowable shear stress in the cast iron
flange is 4MPa. The shaft and key material are made up of C40 steel ( y= 328.6 MPa) Use ASME code to
design shat and the Key.
8. Design an Oldham’s coupling to transmit 50kW at 1200 rpm. The permissible shear and compressive stresses
for the shaft material are 50 and 100Mpa respectively. The permissible pressure between the slots and tongue
not to exceed 8MPa.
9. Design a protective type cast iron flange coupling for a steel shaft transmitting 30kW power at 200rpm. The
allowable shear stress in the shaft and key material is 40MPa. The allowable shear stress in the bolt and flange
is 60MPa and 10MPa respectively. The maximum torque to be 20% greater than the full load torque.
10. Design an Oldham’s coupling to transmit 50kW at 200 rpm. Distance between shaft axis is 5mm, the
permissible shear for the shaft material are 40. The permissible pressure between the slots and tongue not to
exceed 8 MPa.
11. Design a bushed pin type coupling to connect a motor shaft to a pump shaft transmitting 20kW power at
1440 rpm. The allowable shear and crushing stress for steel shafts, keys, and pins are 40MPa and 80MPa
respectively. The allowable shear stress for cast iron flange is 10MPa and allowable bearing pressure for
rubber bush is 0.5MPa.
12. Design a double riveted butt joint to connect two plates of 20mm thick. The joint is zig zag riveting and has
equal cover plate. The allowable Tensile stress for the material is 100MPa. The allowable shear stress and
crushing stress for the material are 60MPa and 120MPa respectively.
13. Two length of flat tie bar of 15mm thick are connected by abut joint with equal cover plate on either side.
If a load of 500kN is acting on the tie bar, design the joint such that the section of the bar is is not reduced by
more than one rivet hole. The working stress for the material of the bar is 120MPa in tension, 70 MPa in shear
and 140 MPa in crushing.
