Assignment 01

The document summarizes the manufacturing process of cement and the process of concreting. It also provides short notes on form work, uses and functions of concrete admixtures, and waterproofing and damp proofing of concrete. Specifically, it outlines that the cement manufacturing process involves extracting raw materials like limestone and sand, crushing and blending them, pre-heating, firing in a kiln, cooling, and final grinding. It also notes that concreting involves mixing, transporting, placing, compacting, and curing concrete. Formwork is a temporary mold used for concrete that can account for 20-25% of structure costs.

ASSIGNMENT 01 714918251022

01.Explain in detail the manufacturing process of cement.

A cement manufacturing plant is usually located at or near

a natural deposit of the materials composing cement.
Raw Materials
1. Limestone [CaCo3]
2. Sand [ SiO2]
3. Shale
4. Clay[sio2,al2o3,Fe2O3]
5. Iron ore/mill scale [Fe2O3]
These materials may or may not be a natural mixture but in
either case chemical analysis must be made to determine,

 The percent of lime

 The percent of clay
 The percent and kind of other ingredients.

Process of cement making,

 Raw material extraction
 Crushing, Proportioning and blending
 Pre-heating raw materials
 Kiln phase
 Cooling and final grinding
 Packing and shipping

02.Elaborate the process involved in concreting.

Concreting process involves the following

Mixing of concrete
Transporting concrete
Placing concrete
Compacting concrete
Curing concrete

03.Write a short note on form work.

ASSIGNMENT 01 714918251022

 The form work or shuttering is a temporary construction

used as a mould for the structure in which concrete is
placed and in which it hardens and matures.
 The cost of form work may be upto 20 to 25% of the cost of
structure in building work and even higher in bridges.
 Form works are classified as wooden, plywood, steel,
combined wood steel, reinforced concrete and plain
concrete.
 Timber is the most common material used for the frame work.
 The disadvantages of wooden form work is the possibility of
warping, swelling and shrinkage of the timber.
04.Brief about the uses of admixtures concrete and its function.

 To reduce the cost of concrete construction.

 To modify the properties of harden concrete.
 To ensure the quality of concrete during mixture,
transporting, placing and curing.
 To overcome certain emergencies during concrete operations.
Functions

 Air-entering
 Water-reducing
 Retarding
 Accelerating
 Plasticizers

05. Write a short note on water proofing and damp proofing

concrete.

Water proofing concrete

Waterproofing concrete, is designed to stop water

infiltration through a concrete structure. The materials have
the ability to bridge cracks that develop over time due to their
elastic, flexible nature and the thickness of the applied
coatings. It is essential in areas where there is significant rain
and high water tables.
ASSIGNMENT 01 714918251022

Damp proofing concrete

Damp proofing is a coating usually asphalt-based, that is

either sprayed on or hand applied to the outside of the wall.
Through less frequently recommended in modern residential
construction, it is still an acceptable form of treatment in
many situations. An epoxy liquid membrane is applied to the
floor itself and creates an impermeable layer meaning that
water stays in the concrete slab.
