0
Item 1 Item 2 Item 3 Item 4 Item 5

TASK 1 TASK 2
Presents graph, chart, or other illustration. Presents short statements or arguments.
You will be asked to describe the picture. You will be asked to discuss the argument
and give your opinion.
HOW TO SOLVE TASK 1

1. Give Introduction
2. Describe ONLY what's on the picture
3. Use formal vocabularies
4. Avoid redundancy of words
5. Use the correct grammatical tenses
6. Add conclusion
7. Make sure it's minimum 150 words
GIVE INTRODUCTION

Always begin with an introduction. In the introduction you need to

explain:
what is the picture.
Is it a chart? is it a map?

You also need to explain what the picture is showing.

what's the main topic of the picture?
sales increase? growth of something?

Does it show any dimension?

time? place? gender?
Main topic
Describes Gender
what is the dimension
picture

"The chart shows the percentage of males and females

who were overweight in Australia from 1980 to 2010."

Main topic Time

dimension
Place
dimension
DESCRIBE ONLY WHAT'S IN THE
PICTURE
Do(s):
describe what each color depicts
explain percentage increase
differences between gender
talk about the year differences

Don't(s):
make assumption of next 10 years growth
forget about the details
talk about the fact that is not in the picture
(even if you have the knowledge about it).

Ex: "due to the increase of fast food chains in Australia...."

USE FORMAL VOCABULARIES & AVOID REDUNDANCY
Since IELTS is for academic/professional purpose, try to
use formal form.
pssst,
instead of "didn't", use "did not"
thesaurus.com
instead of "describe", try "depict"
really helps!

Start to make your own dictionary of 'smart' terms:

instead of "dramatically decreasing", use

"plummeting"
instead of "important", use "substantial" or
"critical"
USE THE CORRECT GRAMMATICAL TENSES

REMEMBER THIS:

Use past tenses, because whatever happened in the picture,

it’s in the past, it’s already happened.
That’s why they create a picture of it.

UNLESS:
It's a picture of a map.
CLOSING

ADD CONCLUSION MAKE SURE IT'S

Do not forget to add conclusion! MINIMUM 150 WORDS
Conclusion can start with these
terms: You should write minimum
In conclusion, 150 words, no less!
All in all,
In summary,
Overall, it may be said...
HOW TO SOLVE TASK 2

1. Give Introduction
2. Provide 2 sides of persperctive
3. Give your opinion on the argument
4. Add closing statement/conclusion
5. Pay attention to your grammar!
6. Again, avoid redundancy
7. Write minimum 250 words
EXAMPLE

A typical IELTS writing task 2 usually looks like this:

Many students now have the opportunity to study in

other countries. Studying abroad may bring some
benefits to some students but it also has a significant
number of disadvantages.

Discuss both sides of the argument and give your own

opinion!
INTRODUCTION
Again, always start with an introduction. But the
introduction is a little bit different. So here are some tips...

Start with a supporting statement for the given argument.

Follow it with a statement that leads to possibility of two
perspectives.
State your opinion! Yep, say it from the start :)
Supporting statement.

An increasing number of students are deciding to study

overseas and many find the option very attractive. Whilst

this is not something that every student would choose, it

is, in my opinion, an extremely attractive proposition for

those who would benefit from the opportunity.

contradictory
statement Your own opinion
GIVE PERSPERCTIVE

Some people would agree with the statement, but some

wouldn't. So..

Try to put yourself in their shoes.

If you would agree, why? what's the reason?
If you would disagree, why? what makes you disagree?
Put them in separate paragraph
ADD CONCLUSION & OPINION

After you explain the positive and negative side of the

statement. You should close it with a conclusion.

You can start with a conclusion statement ("all in all", "in

conclusion", etc)

Emphasize your opinion here!

GRAMMAR, REDUNDANCY, AND NUMBER OF
WORDS
Again, pay attention to the grammatical structure. However,
since task 2 is about your own opinion, you can use combination
of present and future tense.
Try to enrich your vocabulary, so your choice of words would be
better ;)
You only need to write minimum 250 words, so use your time
wisely!
ADDITIONAL TIPS Tip 4:
Make your own dictionary of
terms/synonyms. For example
"decrease" can be "fall", "plummet",
Tip 1:
"decline", "drop", etc.
Exercise. A lot. One day one
exercise is good enough :) Tip 5:
Tip 2: Don't forget to pray and be positive :)
Use timer when you exercise. Start
slow, and increase your pace.

Tip 3:
Check your grammar every now
and then. Using grammarly is really
helpful.
GOOD LUCK!
