Course /Branch: B.Tech. /ME Semester: - 6th IInd Sessional Test
Subject (With Code):- Fluid machinery (TME ) Session: 2012 -2013 Roll No Time: 90 minutes Max Marks: 30 Note: Attempt All questions:-
1 Attempt any two of the following: (3 x 2)
a) What are ‘Velocity of Whirl’ and ‘Velocity of flow’ and why are they so named? b) Derive the expression for specific speed of turbine and centrifugal pump. c) Draw main characteristics curves for Pelton, Francis and Kaplan turbines.
2 Attempt any one of the following: (5 x 1)
(a) A single acting reciprocating pump having plunger diameter of 115 mm and stroke of 230 mm is placed with its centre line 3m above the level of water in the sump. The suction pipe having dia. 90 mm and 4.2 m long. If separation occurs at 2.4 m of water, find the maximum speed of the pump to avoid separation at the beginning of the suction stroke . Assume atmospheric pressure as 10.3 m of water and simple harmonic motion of the plunger . What power is consumed in overcoming friction in suction pipe at this speed ? Assume pipe friction co-efficient as 0.01. (b) Francis turbine : Shaft power = 14990kw , runner speed = 275 rpm, Net head = 110 m Diameter at inlet = 1.8 times diameter at outlet. Axial length of blade at inlet = 0.15 times diameter at inlet , flow ratio= 0.20, hydraulic efficiency = 90 % , overall efficiency = 85% Velocity of flow at inlet = velocity of flow at outlet. Determine: (i) inlet and outlet diameters (ii) guide blade angle (iii) vane angles.
3 Attempt any two of the following: (5 x 1)
a) What are the functions of a draft tube, draw its sketch and what is cavitation? How does it occur in hydraulic turbines and what are its effects? b) Show that the work saved in overcoming friction in the pipelines by fitting air vessels is 84.8% for a single acting reciprocating pump.
4 Attempt any one of the following: (5 x 1)
a) A centrifugal pump having impeller internal and external diameters equals to 20cm and 40cm respectively , suction and delivery heads are 5m and 25m respectively; diameters of suction and delivery pipes equals to 12cm and 8cm respectively; discharge rate = 0.035 m3/s and RPM is 950. If the vane ooutlet angle is 45deg, flow velocity is constant and is equal to 1.8 m/s and the power required to run the pump is 15kw. Determine: (i) The vane angle of impeller at inlet. (ii) The overall manometric efficiency of the pump. b) A straight conical draft tube attached to a Francis turbine has an inlet of diameter 3m and its outlet area is 20 m2. The velocity of water at inlet is 5 m/s. The inlet is set 5 m above the tail race level. Assuming the loss of head in the draft tube equals half the velocity head at outlet , determine (i) The pressure head at the top of the draft tube, (ii)Total head at the top taking tail race level as datum, (iii) Power of water at outlet of runner, (iv) Power of water at the end of the draft tube, (v) The power lost in the draft tube.
5. Attempt any three of the following: (3 x 3)
(a) Describe with the help of neat sketch working principle of hydraulic coupling. (b) The water is supplied at a rate of 0.02 m3/s from a height of 3 m to a hydraulic ram. The ram raises 0.002 m3/s water to a height of 20 meter .Determine Rankine efficiency of the hydraulic ram. (c) Describe the working of hydraulic press and hydraulic accumulator. (d) Prove that a draft tube prevents the loss of head of reaction turbine.
