2) Comparison of Rate Law From Literature

This document compares rate laws for the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate from literature sources. Experimental data on conductivity and concentrations over time are provided from two batches. The rate constant k' is calculated from the slope of ln(C0/C) vs. time plots for each batch. For the first batch, k' values of 0.2292 min-1 (from the slope) and 0.1676 min-1 (from non-linear regression) were obtained, with a 27% error between them. For the second batch, k' values of 0.1223 min-1 (from the slope) and 0.0756 min-1 (from other methods) were obtained, with a 38% error

The rate law of the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate was determined by using an integral method.
According to the graph above, k’ can be obtained from the slope with a value of 0.2292 min-1.
The rate law equation obtained from this data is shown below :
−r A =0.2292 C A C B
From Part 1, the k’ obtained using excess method and finite difference method is 0.0756 min -

.

Percentage error =¿ 0.0756−0.2292∨ ¿ X 100 % ¿

0.2292
= 67.02%
However, the k’ value obtained from part 1 using non-linear regression method is 0.1676
min-1.

Percentage error =¿ 0.1676−0.2292∨ ¿ X 100 % ¿

0.2292
= 26.88%

The rate law of the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate was also determined by using an integral
method. According to the graph above, k’ can be obtained from the slope with a value of
0.1223 min-1.
The rate law equation obtained from this data is shown below :
−r A =0.1223 C A C B

From Part 1, the k’ obtained using excess method and finite difference method is 0.0756 min -

.

Percentage error =¿ 0.0756−0.1223∨ ¿ X 100 % ¿

0.1223
= 38.18%
However, the k’ value obtained from part 1 using non-linear regression method is 0.1676
min-1.

Percentage error =¿ 0.1676−0.1223∨ ¿ X 100 % ¿

0.1223
= 37.04%
Based on the above literatures, excess method and finite difference method is having larger
percentage error than non-linear regression method. Thus, nonlinear regression method is
more accurate than excess method and finite difference method in this case.
