Experiment 3-Edited

This experiment investigates the binary solid-liquid phase diagram of the naphthalene-diphenylamine system. Various mixtures of naphthalene and diphenylamine are prepared and their cooling curves are recorded to determine break/arrest temperatures. These temperatures are plotted against mole fractions to construct the liquidus curves and phase diagram. From the diagram, the eutectic temperature and composition, as well as the melting points of naphthalene and diphenylamine, can be determined.

Binary Solid Phase Diagram

Introduction:

The heterogeneous equilibrium between solid and liquid phases of the

naphthalene-diphenylamine system is investigated in this experiment. The binary
phase diagram is constructed by making cooling curves of mixtures at different
overall compositions. From the phase diagram, the eutectic temperature and
composition of the mixture, as well as the melting points and heats of fusion for both
naphthalene and diphenylamine are determined. For this experiment make a binary
phase diagram with complete labels from the results of the experiment.

Procedure:

Heat different mixtures of naphthalene and diphenylamine placed in a test

tube in an oil bath until complete melting. Total mixture should weigh to 10 g.
Prepare 100, 90, 80, 70, 65, 55, 45, 30, 15, 0 % Naphthalene

Fit the test tube in to a larger test tube when the sample has completely
melted to serve as an air jacket. Record the temperature using a thermometer every
30 seconds while thoroughly stirring using a wire stirrer. Continue cooling until
mixture completely solidifies while still noting the drop in temperature.

Instructions:

On each cooling curve, determine the break and/or arrest temperatures using the
thermometer readings.

1. Calculate mole fractions.

2. Plot break/arrest temperatures vs. mole fraction. Find the liquidus curves.
3. Calculate the melting points of both naphthalene and diphenylamine from the
phase diagram.
4. Find the eutectic mixture and eutectic temperature from the intersection of
the trendlines for the liquidus curves. Estimate the error.
