Filipino women are known to be conservative. They are actually taught how important it
is to remain pure on their wedding day. Courting a Filipina is literally laborious. Traditional
courtship requires men to serve her whole family in order to get her. That is how Filipinos value
In modern times, Filipinos gradually lose their values because sex outside marriage and
are not only affected with this, but also our values as a Filipino. By legalizing prostitution we
Prostitution is just a product of extreme poverty. It is not a job that every girl dreams of,
but because of poverty, women are forced to do such dirty act. It is easy to gain money when
your body is your only investment. In one article I have read, a woman whom once became a
prostitute said that having that kind of job was a very traumatic experience. She was abused by
her “customers”, her life was threatened, but she can’t escape from it. She doesn’t have a choice,
she thought that having this kind job is the only way she could earn money for her kids.
Prostitution downgrades the worth of women, as a woman we don’t deserve this kind of
treatment.
The result of prostitution also leads to the increase of number of people getting affected
adolescent girls because of vulnerabilities created by unequal cultural, social and economic
status. Women account for more than half the number of people living with HIV worldwide.
Young women (10-24 years old) are twice as likely to acquire HIV as young men the same age.

One of the main reasons why the idea of legalizing prostitution is being considered is to
protect the right of the sex workers and to have a “greater chance” of safer sex practices by
providing health and safety standards when prostitution is decriminalized. The United Nations, in
its October 2012 report, said criminalization “increases vulnerability to HIV by fueling stigma
and discrimination” and suggested that Asian countries, including the Philippines, legalize
prostitution. (Rappler)
I strongly oppose regarding the United Nation’s proposal, legalizing prostitution will only
benefit the sex industry. It will open the way for a greater exploitation by traffickers, and brothel
owners and managers, recruiters and sex tourists, making them legitimate businessmen.
Legalization of prostitution will not solve poverty, which is the main reason why
prostitution occurs. In fact, children of prostitutes will be greatly affected. They will be
influenced by their prostitute mothers and will eventually enter the sex industry instead of going
to school. It simply means that more people will rely and work as sex workers, resulting to the
Also, as a Christian, I believe prostitution is a sin. God's desire is that we stay pure and
use our bodies as tools for His use and glory (Romans 6:13). First Corinthians 6:13 says, "The
body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body."
There are lots of decent job around us, we just have to open our eyes and take time to
look on the brighter side. Again, Legalizing prostitution is not a solution, what we need is more
action to rescue and give a life of dignity, sustainable employment and education to the women
