Physical fitness plays a very significant role in one’s life, and an individual
who is physically fit is less prone to medical problems as well. A fit person
can live life to its fullest.

Fitness also refers to a person’s mental condition. Even though a person

is physically fit, he/she will not be able to function effectively if he/she is
mentally unwell. Mental fitness can only be attained if one’s body is doing
well. Exercising regularly and eating right can help a person relax his/her
mind and remove stress.
A person who is physically fit is able to maintain his/her most optimum
weight and can prevent cardiac arrest and other health problems. He/
She is considered healthy. In order to maintain a relaxed state of mind, a
person should be physically active. A person can be considered fit, both
physically and mentally, if he/she is strong enough to face the challenges
of life.
The components of health-related fitness are the bases from which one
measures his/her general well-being. It is the aim of doing an exercise to
improve one’s capabilities in each of these components. Different sports
can be more demanding for some and less demanding for others.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
There are six health-related components of fitness. These are cardio-
vascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, muscular endurance,
body composition, and organic vigor.

1. Cardiovascular endurance is the ability to do continued exercise

that places demands on the circulatory and respiratory systems of a
person over a prolonged period of time. Cardiovascular endurance is
developed through activities, such as running, walking, cycling, and
swimming.

2. Muscular strength is the maximal force that can be applied against a

resistance. It is the amount of force a person’s muscles can produce.
It is often measured by the amount of weight one can lift or by the
heaviest weight one can push or pull.

3. Flexibility is the ability to use one’s joints fully through a wide range of
motions. It is the measure of free movement of a person’s joints.

207
4. Muscular endurance is the ability of body muscles to sustain repeated
contractions against a resistance. An individual with good muscular
endurance is better able to resist fatigue.

5. Body composition is usually measured by the percentage of body fat,

bone, water, and muscles in a human body. It is the amount of fat
cells compared with the lean cells in the body mass.

6. Organic vigor refers to the good condition of the heart and the lungs
which contributes to the ability to resist disease.

The components of skill-related fitness are not the skills associated with
any particular sport. Instead, they are the underlying skills which are
brought to bear when participating in a sport.

There are six skill-related components of fitness. These are agility, balance,
coordination, power, reaction time, and speed. These are important fitness
components, not just for sporting ability, but also for use in everyday life.
1. Agility is the ability to change the direction of a body at speed rapidly
and accurately. It is a combination of speed, balance, power, and
coordination.

2. Balance is the ability to keep an upright posture while standing still or

moving.

3. Coordination is the ability to use the senses together with one’s body
parts, or to use two or more body parts together to carry out a series
of movements or motor tasks smoothly and efficiently.

4. Power is the ability to use strength quickly. It is a combination of

strength and speed. It is the amount of force a muscle can exert.

5. Reaction time is the ability to respond to stimuli quickly. It is the

amount of time a person takes to move once he/she realizes the need
to act.

6. Speed is the ability to move all or part of the body as quickly as

possible.
