Quick Reference - Ultrasonic Testing

This document describes a simulator for ultrasonic testing that can model ray tracing through pipes and pipe fittings. It requires inputs like material thickness, probe angle, and beam path to calculate the distance and depth of defects. The simulator has two modules - pipe to pipe, and pipe to fitting configurations. It provides outputs of the distance from the probe to the defect and the depth from the reflector to the pipe surface. The document outlines the steps to use the simulator and examples of its pipe and fitting modeling capabilities.

SIMULATOR FOR ULTRASNONIC TESTING

Macro Details

Macro Path: ultra.ba (Complied Version) , If not available in main window , select Toolbox
menu from settings and check on QMD.

Ultrasonic testing for Pipe Material

Fig 1.1

1. PURPOSE

To find the depth and the distance of the Ultrasonic ray passed through angled probe when
beam path is known

The application comprises of two modules :

The ray tracing between Pipe to Pipe and Pipe to Fittings

2. General :

Basic Terminology and Parameters

Skip distance

Beam Path

3. INPUTS REQUIRED :

Following details to the given as input

1, Root Gap
2, Root face
3, Pipe Thickness : Member1
4,Pipe Thickness : Member 2
5,Probe angle : ( Basically used values 30,45,60,70)
6, Skip distance : The distance of the probe from the centre of the weld
7, Beam Path : The distance along the ray where defect is detected.

4. OUTPUT RESULTS :

1, Distance from the Probe to Defect : XDIST

2, Depth from the deflector to the top surface of Pipe : YDIST

5. Steps to be followed for using the Macro

5.1 Open ultrasonic.dgn as delivered with the application which serves as a template for
Text height , Symbology and dimension parameters.

5.2 Select UTM from toolbox option in Microstation .

5.3 Click on the pallete (Fig 1.1) where the image of UTM is shown.

5.4 This will open the application with two options

A, Pipe to pipe
B, Pipe to fittings

5.5 User need to select Pipe-Pipe or Pipe-Fitting option .

PIPE TO PIPE

On selecting Pipe-pipe option following dialog appears .

Fig 5.a

5.6 The various parameters required for the option (Pipe to Pipe ) is shown below

Enter parameters through as shown in Fig 5.a , the various parameters and the definition are
given in Fig 1.a

User can select either probe to be on Member1 and Member 2 .

Member1 : Output showing same thickness

Member1 : Varying thickness

5.7 The application can also draw profile on selection of Probe at Member2

5.8 Follow steps 5 and select option member2 from the skip parameters group box .

5.9 The user can select Clear button from Fig 1.1 to clear the screen and reinput different
parameters to recreate the profile .

6 . Pipe to Fitting :

6.a

On selection of Pipe to Fitting as shown in Fig 6.a following dialog box appears .

Fig 6.b

Pipe to Fitting consists of two methods namely

6.1, SetOut (Scanning from the Nozzle of Equipment)

6.2,SetIN (Scanning from the Shell)

6.1.1 SetOUT:

In this method scanning is done on the Nozzle part of the Equipment using probes of
45,60,70 degree

6.1.2 Steps :

Following Inputs are required for SETON type

1, Root Face
2, Root Gap
3, Shell Thickness
4,Nozzle thickness
5, Bevel Angle
6, Skip Distance
7,Probe Angle
8, Beam Path

Seton method to selected

All the required inputs need to entered by the user in accordance with the actual values
obtained and on selecting OK as shown in Fig 6.b the profile gets generated .

Following to be considered while entering values and Validation are provided as

 Nozzle thickness shall not be greater than shell thickness .

 Skip distance cannot be greater than 3 times of Shell thickness .
 Beam path value cannot go beyond the shell .

6.1.3 Output : Set ON

Fig 6.C

6.2

6.2.1 In this method scanning is done on the shell using probes of 45,60,70 degree . This
method has provision of scanning from the Top as well as Bottom of the Shell .

Inputs :

Same as 6.1.2 except for Set in the Method to be selected as SETIN and side of
scanning to be mentioned

6.2.2 Following to be considered while entering values and Validation are provided
 All validation are as per 6.1.2
 Scanning to be selected either Top or Bottom , with respect to the one selected the
other side will be changed automatically .
 Provision made such centre of the shell be 1/3,1/2,2/3 from the Top surface .

Steps :

6.2.3 Input :

Same as 6.1.2 , on entering the values as shown in 6.b the following output is
generated . For the following ouput scanning is done from Top with 1/3 depth .
