Rate Your Professor

RateYourProfessor.com allows students to rate and review professors from universities in Bangladesh. However, the site has some limitations like only allowing one review per student. The document proposes 17 additional features that could be added to improve the site such as allowing replies to comments, verifying student identities, highlighting reviews from majors related to the course, and creating social media pages and professor profiles. The proposed features aim to make the ratings more constructive and reliable for students choosing courses and professors.

About Us:
RateYourProfessors.com is the largest online destination for professor ratings in Bangladesh.
Users are adding thousands of ratings to hundreds of professors from different universities. User-
generated content can make RateYourProfessor.com the highest trafficked site for quickly
researching and rating professors and top 100 private universities across the country.

Students can comment on and rate their respective universities as well, by visiting their
University's Rate Your Professors page.

Rate Your Professors.com is built for students, by students. Choosing the best courses and
professors is a rite of passage for every student, and connecting with peers on the site can
become a key way for millions of students to navigate this process. The site does what students
have been doing forever - checking in with each other – their friends, their brothers, their sisters,
their classmates – to figure out who's a great professor and who's one you might want to avoid.

Each year, RateYourProfessors.com compiles Top Lists of the Highest Rated Professors, and
Top Private Universities in Bangladesh.

Problems with Rate My Professor:

1) Users are limited to posting one comment.
2) The site only allows one student to review a professor one time per course. Spamming or
dogpiling an account will lead to comment removal and the account being temporarily
locked on the site. So, we will ensure feature that will allow students to have a
conversation with other students on the website as per ‘reply option’ in the comment
section. Hence, users will be allowed to post more than one comment for enhanced
communication.
3) Currently, the site doesn’t have the ability for professors to respond to a specific
comment, but this is functionality that is being worked on. So, we will ensure this in our
website.
4) Due to the anonymity of the site, it is unable to confirm what entry was submitted by a
specific individual and therefore it does not edit or remove entries on site unless they
violate site guidelines. So, we will ensure this feature so that students can delete or edit a
comment after they have posted.
5) This website allows people to make personal comments about each professor. This acts as
a double-edged sword, however. When done well, anyone can find good, constructive
reviews of professors and how they work. When they’re not done well, it becomes a
dumping ground for disgruntled students to bad-mouth professors when they feel
wronged.
Features that can be added to Rate Your Professor:

1) Using machine learning to skim through all the unnecessary comments and put the
relevant ones on top.
2) A student must log in/sign up first to post or view any kinds of rating or comments in this
site.
3) To verify user’s identity, while signing up, a student must provide a photo of his/her
university ID card for further verification.
4) There will be a search bar in the first page having a list of top 100 private universities of
Bangladesh. Among the pre-listed chart, a student can click on his/her desired University
and see its teacher’s ratings. But to post a comment or review, a student has to be of that
specific university. He can’t review a faculty from a varsity where he doesn’t belong.
5) There’s an advertisement portion on the front page, they could add more useful
advertisement like scholarship programs best suited for you (again using machine
learning to find the most suitable scholarship)
6) Options to rate the professor could be made more specific to rate better. For instance, one
option to rate is ‘level of difficulty’ but here it should be mentioned about the things for
which the level of difficulty is being measured like whether the level of difficulty is in
terms of grading, attendance, class participation or late assignment submissions.
7) There are some ‘tags’ to describe the professor where students can select only 3 tags but
not more than that which is a limitation. So, number of selections should get increased to
better describe the professors. Some useful tags can be – Interactive, Non-Friendly,
Friendly, Difficult to understand lectures, Inspirational, Difficult exam questions,
Helpful, Effective lectures, Available during office hours, Good command over the
subject, Provides suggestions etc. Students are also able to detail difficulty of the exams;
whether or not the professor applies a grading curve and if any pop quizzes are to be
expected. It’s helpful to know what to expect in a course and this type of information
lends itself to just that.
8) There are more valuable options which should get added so that students can make
excellent selection before taking a course of a particular faculty. For example, the
following options can get added where students will rate on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being
strongly agree & 5 being strongly disagree:
 The professor uses class time effectively.
 The professor has a good command over the subject and don’t get bothered if frequent
questions are asked.
 The professor is helpful and is available during office hours for help in assignments,
class lectures & project works.
9) When a student searches for a specific school, the site will let him/her know who the top
five highest-rated professors are. This makes it easy to identify the best of the best and
ensures getting a good education.
10) Student comments are posted next to each rating, which helps the reader
understand why certain ratings may have been given. Although there’ll be options to post
personal comments, we need to tighten up the guidelines so that overly-negative
comments and bad words would get removed.
11) There’ll be an optional portion in the website where students can donate in any
amount to be a contributor to the future development of this website.
12) The site can be more useful if it can provide average class GPAs and additional
information about exams, quizzes, class projects and, when applicable, extra credit
opportunities.
13) Also, it’s helpful to see how many students have ranked the professor in total (for
example, if a professor has one star but only one student has rated them, that’s something
to think less about than if a professor has one star and 1,000 students rated them.)
14) Comments of students who have majors related to the course subject should be
highlighted. This actually makes a lot of sense. They're not experts maybe, but they are
going to be quite familiar with the teachers in the course's department. so, chances are,
they have likely taken a course with the professor several times over. And, they probably
liked the subject so they can give an actual portrayal of the professor without
complaining about the subject matter. For example, an accounting major may dislike
writing and, because they dislike the course material in a writing course, may rate a
professor more harshly than, say, a journalism major. However, if a journalism major
were to rate that same writing course negatively, it should set off some red flags.
15) Our website must have official page or groups in Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
and other famous social media platforms for open discussions among students and also
for marketing and advertising purposes.
16) Additionally, teachers may create their own account in this website where they
can engage with their profiles by creating a professor account and providing feedback.
With a professor account, teachers have the ability to post professor notes, add his/her
photo, twitter account, and get alerted when new ratings are posted on his/her account.

17) To easily navigate through the website, there’ll be a portion called Frequently
Asked Questions where some predetermined common questions related to the website
and also their answers will be provided. Such as-

 As a Professor, what can I do about negative reviews on my profile?

Answer: You can always flag a review. If you are concerned that a comment violates our site
guidelines, please report the rating via the "report this rating" link at the bottom of the comment.
Our moderators will review the comment immediately and remove it if it's against our
guidelines.

This is a site where users can voice their opinions and experiences. Please note that only
comments that violate our guidelines are removed. Unfortunately, we do not remove ratings just
because someone may disagree with it.
