INTRODUCTION TO BALLET I : FINAL EXAM GUIDE FALL 2019

PERFROMING ONLY ONE SIDE OF EACH COMBO UNLESS OTHERWISE DIRECTED

PLIÉS –

-2 demi pliés, 1 grand plié followed by a 7 count port de bras sequence then tendu change to
next position

-1st and 5th pos : 3rd port de bras

-2nd and 4th pos : side cambrés

TENDUS FROM 1st –

-Begin in 1st position with a 4 count preparation bringing arm to 2 nd pos.

-Tendu side, close to plié 1st, tendu side with inside leg, close to plié 1 st, tendu side outside leg,
close 1st pos. straight, followed by 2 quicker tendus side to 1 st pos. straight.

-Tendu front, close to plié 1st, tendu back with outside leg, close to plié 1 st, tendu front outside
leg, close 1st pos. straight, followed by 2 quicker tendus front to 1 st pos. straight

- Repeat side, repeat to back

-At the end of combination, plié in first, force arches, relevé with arms in 1 st, arms rise to high
5th, arms open to 2nd, allongé, plié with arms low 5th to finish

TENDUS FROM 5TH –

-Begin in 5th pos., preparation in 4 counts with the arm preparing to high 3 rd pos.

-Tendu front, close 5th,, tendu front, close 5th, pas de cheval in 2 counts, temps lié, temps lié,
close 5th, repeat en crois

-Arm in high 3rd to front, side for side, allongé back for 2nd arabesque ; each temps lié has a
corresponding port de bras

-Plié to relevé sous-sus balance with arms in 1 st pos., rise to high 5th pos, detourné, open arms to
2nd pos. , allongé, plié 5th on other side to finish.

JETÉS FROM 5TH –

-Begin in 5th pos., preparation in 4 counts with the arm preparing to 2 nd pos. and the body
changing to éffacé on count 7.

-2 jetés, 3rd jeté with a piqué then close; perform en crois twice

-Arm stays in 2nd position throughout the exercise.

-Body facings in order are éffacé devant, écarté derriere, éffacé derriere, écarté devant, repeat

ROND DE JAMBE –
-Begin in 5th pos, arm prepares to 2nd pos in 4 counts

-Battement soutenu then straighten and rond de jambe in 2 counts, pass through first position
and rond de jambe in 2 counts, 3 quick rond de jambes then close 5 th to reverse. Perform en
dehors and en dedans on the the floor, then repeat en dehors and en dedans at 25 degrees.

-Arm will take a small 1st port de bras en dehors with the first two counts of en dehors set. Arm
will take a small 1st port de bras en dedans with the first two counts of each en dedans set.

FONDU –

-Begin in 5th pos., facing the barre, arms prepare to the barre in 4 counts.

-Fondu front, assemblé sous-sus, fondu back, assemblé sous-sus, fondu front, extend 45 degrees
front on flat, close 5th, perform en crois, repeat en crois with extension now happening on relevé
instead of flat

-If you’re doing the right side, the pattern for the fondu/emboité is “R/L/R extend” for each
direction

FRAPPÉ –

-Begin in 5th pos. facing the barre, prepare arms to barre in 4 counts, taking a plié on count 8

-Sissonne simple front, emboité back, emboité front, extend front 25 degrees forward, 2 frappés
front, close 5th plié, perform en crois, repeat en crois with frappé now happening on relevé

-If you’re doing the right side the pattern for the sissonne simple/emboité is “R/L/R extend” for
each direction.

ADAGIO –

-Begin in 5th pos. en face, prepare arm to 2nd pos. in 4 counts, turning to éffacé on count 7

-4 count passé developpé in éffacé devant, repeat écarté derriere, repeat croisé devant, plié en
face, straighten up and change to other éffacé to reverse; 4 count passé developpé in éffacé
derriere, écarté devant, croisé derriere, plié en face, straighten up to finish en face.

-Arms will take a high 1st port de bras en dehors with each passé developpé

GRAND BATTEMENTS –

-Begin in 5th pos., preparation in 4 counts bringing the outside arm to high 5 th

-2 grand battements, 3rd grand battement takes a high piqué, repeat en crois

-Arm is high for the front, 2nd for side, allongé front for back, 2 nd pos. for side

-At the end of grand battement combination, inside leg will tendu back, dancer will take a long
4th position with front leg bent and back leg straight. Prepare arms in low third with outside arm
in 2nd. Half pirouette en dehors and balance on other side with arms in 1 st pos.

PIROUETTES FROM 5TH POSITION IN CENTER –


-Begin in 5th position en face, arms prepare to low 3rd pos. in 4 counts, plié count 8.

-Relevé passé bringing arms to 1st pos, plié 5th, repeat with en dehors pirouette in pattern as
follows :

-balance, ¼ : 4x

-balance, ½ : 2x

-balance, single : 2x

TURNS FROM THE CORNER I –

-Begin in tendu croisé derriere

-Forward balancé 4x, tombé pas de bourré 4 th, pirouette en dehors, finish 4th , repeat

TURNS FROM THE CORNER II –

-Begin in sous-sus croisé with arms in low third (downstage arm in 1st pos, upstage arm in 2nd
pos.), tombé 2nd pos on count 8

-Chainé Turns 12 counts, chassé to éffacé derriere hold 4 counts, exit

-Arms in 2nd pos. tombé, arms in 1st pos. for chainé turn

SMALL JUMPS I –

-2 changement, 1 échappé 2nd pos. repeat 4x

-Arms low fifth for changement, arms 1st port de bras for échappé

SMALL JUMPS II –

-Begin in 5th pos. en face with right leg forward, plie on count 8 of 4 count preparation

-Sissone simple front, assemblé, sissone simple back, assemblé, sissone simple front, emboité
back, emboité front, assemblé, REVERSE

-Arms stay low fifth

SMALL JUMPS III –

-Begin in 5th pos. with right leg back

- Glissade side (back leg leads) without changing 5 th, back leg tendus side with straight legs, then
closes to 5th front in plié, repeat to left, repeat to right, repeat tendu portion 2x, REPEAT TO LEFT

-Arms will be in 1st pos. for glissade, arms complete 1st port de bras with tendu portion

MEDIUM/GRAND ALLEGRO –

-Begin in corner standing in croisé derriere tendu

-Temps levé 1st arabesque, temps levé retiré back, chassé 2x, repeat
-Arms 1st arabesque for first jump, arms high 3 rd for 2nd jump, arms 2nd pos. for chassés
