Super White Wash PDF

This lab report describes an experiment on super white washing of denim apparel. The objective was to make the garments extremely white using an optical brightening agent. The recipe involved a multi-step bleaching process using hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, and other chemicals at 95°C. Samples were immersed and stirred during each step then rinsed. Precautions were taken to avoid direct chemical contact with the fabric. The conclusion was that bleaching twice and treating with a whitening agent achieved a brighter look on the denim garments.

Introduction: Super white washing is a washing process which is carried out in mainly
for increasing the whiteness effects of a white fabric. Super white wash is done specially on
the garments made from cotton grey fabric. The garments after washing look extremely
white. In this washing mainly used chemical is optical brightening or whitening agent. It is
one of the most popular and easy application. This type of wash changes the out look and
comfortability.

Objective of super white wash:

1. To make white the garments.
2. To achieve the buyer washing standard.
3. For soft feeling to wear the garments.
4. To remove size materials from the garments etc.
5. To increase rubbing fastness.
6. To change the outlook, style, fashion of the garment.
7. To get a fading effect on garment in irregular pattern.

Recipe:

Step 1 (Bleaching):

M:L ratio = 1:30

Detergent = 5 ml/L

Caustic soda (NaOH) = 12%

H2O2 = 50 ml/L

Stabilizer = 15%

Temperature = 95°C

Time =50 min

Step 2 (hot wash):

Water = 500 ml

Temperature =60°C

Time = 10 min

Step 3 (additional bleaching):

M:L ratio = 1:30

Detergent = 5 ml/L

Caustic soda (NaOH) = 10%

H2O2 = 50 ml/L

Stabilizer = 15%

Temperature = 95°C

Time = 15 min

Step 4 (hot wash):

Water = 500 ml

Temperature =60°C

Time = 5 min

Recipe calculation:
Fabric weight = 44.35 gm

M:L ratio = 1:30

Step 1:

Required amount of water = (44.35*30) =1330.5 ml

Required amount of detergent = (1330.5*5/1000) = 6.67 ml

Required amount of NaOH = (12*44.35/100) = 5.32 gm

Required amount of H2O2 = (1330.5*50/1000) = 66.52 ml

Required amount of stabilizer = (15*44.35/100) = 6.65 gm

Step 2:

Amount of water as required.

Step 3: fabric weight =41.10 gm.

Required amount of water = (41.10*30) =1233 ml

Required amount of detergent = (1233*5/1000) = 6.17 ml

Required amount of NaOH = (10*41.10/100) = 4.11 gm

Required amount of H2O2 = (1233*50/1000) = 61.652 ml

Required amount of stabilizer = (15*41.10/100) = 6.165gm

Step 4:

Amount of water as required.

Working procedure:

Step 1:

 Water was taken as per calculation.

 Other chemical was added into the water.
 Fabric was immersed in water then raised to 95°C and kept for 50 minutes.
 Then the liquor was dropped

Step 2:

 Required water was taken and raised to 60°C.

 Fabric was immersed and kept it for 10 minutes.
 Then the liquor was dropped.

Step 3:

 Again Water was taken as per calculation.

 Again Other chemical was added into the water.
 Fabric was immersed in water then raised to 95°C and kept for 50 minutes.
 Finally the liquor was dropped off.

Step 4:

 Required water was taken and raised to 60°C.

 Fabric was immersed and kept it for 10 minutes.
 Then the liquor was dropped.

Sample:

Precautions:

 Bleaching has to be done at high temperature.

 During adding chemicals it should be kept in mind that the chemicals do not get
direct contact with fabric.
 Care should be taken during dropping off the fabric.
 Stirring of fabric is done in order to get better bleach wash.
Conclusion:
In this experiment we have treated the fabric with H2O2 and cotton chemicals. The
garments were bleached twice time and then treated with whitening agent to get a brighter
look. Higher temperature was maintained during the whole treatment. After washing,
denim checks the reverse side of the fabric to evaluate if adequate whitening agent has
been used during rinsing.
