Let’s Study This

Read and understand the problem carefully.

Nito has one cartolina. He divided it into 100 equal parts

as shown below. He gave 20 parts to his classmate. What part
of the whole cartolina did he give?
Let us solve the problem using the
illustration at the left. 20 of the 100
equal parts can be expressed 20 or 0.20.
100

20
The fraction is equal to 0.20 in
100
20
decimal. We read the fraction as
100
twenty hundredths. The same way with
0.20 as twenty hundredths.

20
- The answer to the question above is or 0.20 of his cartolina
100
was given to his classmate.

1 whole 7 1.07 is the shaded part which is

100 read as one and seven hundredths

The decimal point is read as and when the decimal number

is more than one.

Look at how we write the decimals in words and in standard form.

In Words Standard Form

1. seventy-eight 0.78
hundredths
2. one and twelve 1.12
hundredths
3. ninety-nine 0.99
hundredths
4. five 0.05
hundredths

In writing decimals which are less than 1 in standard form, we

write 0 before the decimal point to avoid misinterpretation. If there is
zero before the decimal point, we can easily identify the number as
decimal.

Decimals through hundredths have two decimal places after the

decimal point. We use zero as a place holder to complete the decimal
places.
