This study aimed to design a machine that can split bamboo shoots and grind knots to save time and labor in the bamboo craft industry in the Philippines. The researchers developed a machine with a chain-driven splitter that can handle bamboo shoots from 12-5.9 cm in diameter, producing an average of 6.74 splits per second. A grinder attached to the same motor removes knots from the splits at 4000 rpm. Testing showed the splitter could process 105 shoots per hour into 10 splits each, while the grinder removed knots from 10 splits in about 30 seconds. The machine was designed to help local craftsmen increase production and income through mechanized bamboo processing.

ABSTRACT

For many years, Philippines has been a country of rich

culture and traditions. Most of them are define by the broad passion
of our local craftsmen and one of the most accustomed industry in the
country is bamboo crafting. Through centuries, Filipinos have learned
to utilize its abundance in various ways. As the world demands a
continuous modernization, the bamboo industry must also be
x innovative in order to sustain and preserve this heritage.
CONCLUSION
For this reason, this study aims to design a machine that can
handle both the splitting and the knot grinding process on bamboo
The group ended up with a design of a chain-driven bamboo shoots to save time and labor. The machine is to be driven by a single
splitting machine and knots grinder which runs at a speed of 29 motor connected to belts and chain drive to power both the grinder
rpm and 4000 rpm respectively. The splitter portion can handle and the feeder. The feeder slides on a linear motion pushing the
several types of bamboo shoots which have an (outside) bamboo to the cutter, while the grinder moves on a rotational motion
diameter ranging from 12 cm and 5.9 cm. From the data removing the knots of the passing bamboo strips respectively. The
obtained in testing, the splitter can process an average of 6.74 splitter converts a bamboo shoots to strip in about six to seven
sec per feed. Meanwhile, the splits produced were normally 105 seconds producing 10 splits when maximum number of blades is
shoots per hour given that the length of the bamboo is 5ft. installed and the grinder removes knots on the other end while
running at a speed of 4000 rpm. With this technology, the proponents
are looking forward on helping the local bamboo craftsmen to achieve
new optimum potential production and income.

RECOMMENDATION
TITLE
This project has evolved greatly in terms of the design due
to many considerations hindering its supposed full potential.
Some of the changes were based on the financial capacity of this
project. To secure the earlier ideas made as this project
progresses, the proponents listed topics which may be improved
on this study. Future developers of related projects may refer to
the topics below.

result in less working duration. Machinery from various
sources have become operational in recent years for the
primary handling of bamboo by bamboo processing unit. The
trends of innovation in the machinery in treating bamboo Fabrication Design

that the bamboo shoot will be pushed by a feeder using a chain and
sprockets assembly to a cutting blade. The blade set that shall split
the bamboo can be disassembled and vary depending on the desired
number of splits. The blade set has a hole on each side for a nut to
enter.

To continue, the split specimens were also used on

testing the grinder. Earlier, there were 60 splits produced in
total. The following experiment required 10 splits per trial
which means there will be 5 trials available for knot-grinding.
Using the data collected on the five trials, the group were able
to get the average number of splits which the grinder can
process in an hour.
