Rapid Processes Change Landforms: Lesson Concept Rapid Processes, Such As Volcanic Eruptions, Earthquakes
Time 60 minutes
Teacher Note: Display the Prezi or Powerpoint-presentation one slide at a time instead
of preparing image sets for Explore #2.
Procedure:
Engage (5 minutes) Rapid processes (landslides) quickly change
landforms.
1. Display slides 2 and 3 of the Prezi or Powerpoint. These are images of the La
Conchita landslide area before the landslide. Have students describe what they

see in the image. [Expected Student Response (ESR): I see a hill, a road, and
houses.] Record student observations.
2. Display slides 4-6 of the Prezi or Powerpoint. These are images of the La Conchita
landslide area after the landslide. Have students describe what they see in these
images. Have students compare their observations of the area before and after the
landslide. Have students describe the changes to the area. Have students
describe how they know the hill changed. [(ESR): The land has moved. The land
slid down the hill. The houses are under the land. The road moved.]
3. Ask students if the landslide was a slow change or a rapid change. Accept all
responses.
Teacher Note: Students may want to share personal experiences with the La Conchita
landslide. Allow additional time for students to share experiences. Students may notice
the red hillside, this is due to the photograph, the hill was not red. Students may also
notice the arrow and the car. Use the size of the car to note the scale of the hill.
11. Ask students to build a paper cup tower inside of a paper plate.
12. Have each group place 10 ping-pong balls inside a second plate.
13. Place the plate with the tower on top of the ping-pong ball plate.
14. Have the students simulate an earthquake by rolling the tower plate on the ping-
pong ball plate.
15. Have students think-pair-share a response to the following question: How does the
earthquake simulation represent a rapid change? [(ESR): The toppling cups
represent the rapid change that occurs during an earthquake.]
