Test 2 On Grammar

If I had to live on a desert island for a year, I would bring a knife, a fishing rod, and a solar powered radio. I would choose a knife because it could be used for cutting wood, building shelter, and preparing food. I would bring a fishing rod to catch fish for food. A solar powered radio would allow me to get weather and news updates, and listen to music to entertain myself and not feel isolated. Being stranded on a deserted island for a year would be very challenging. However, with these three items - a knife, fishing rod, and radio - I think

TERM TEST 1 GROUP ONE Reading Comprehension Text 1.

UT 5-6 A
Read the article and answer the questions with a word or short phrase.
Travel tips for visitors to Greece
The first piece of advice for any traveller in any country is to learn a bit about the culture. That includes the
language. You don’t have to speak Greek perfectly, but you should try to learn a few useful, everyday phrases. It is also
a good idea to understand how important Greece was in the past. Modern Greece is very different, of course, but the
history is a very important part of the culture. You don’t need to become an expert, but you can get more out of your
visit if you know a few basics.
Make sure you leave your hotel and go exploring! Even on a small island, you will probably find something of
historical interest, like a local museum. There is a wide variety of landscape in Greece – mountains, forests, rivers and
lakes – not only beaches and olive groves, so you can do lots more than just water sports. On that note, if you are going
walking or in the water, keep safety in mind – wear suitable clothes and tell someone you are going.
Do try the food – it’s delicious! When you are deciding what to eat, they often take you into the kitchen so you can
have a look. And you can ask the waiter to bring you something you see on another table if it’s easier. You should be
careful when ordering fish, though, as that can be a very expensive meal.
And finally, if you go in the summer, be careful of the sun and the heat. When temperatures are nearly 40 degrees,
it’s very tiring and easy to burn.
1 What should all travellers learn about the country they are visiting?
2 How well does the writer think visitors should know Greek?
3 Which types of landscape are there?
4 If tourists go walking, what should they do?
5 What should you avoid ordering if you haven’t got much money?

Reading Comprehension TEXT 2 UT 6-8 A Read the blog and write which person ...
BITS AND PIECES
Anna’s blog about – well, about life and stuff!
I collected stamps for about a month years ago but, apart from that, I don’t really collect anything – I just have
stuff. I’ve got clothes, a few TRs and DVDs, and a few posters on my wall, but I don’t think of myself as a collector.
Last week, I was chatting to my friend, Jennifer, in the USA. Jennifer’s big love is Justin Bieber, and she collects
anything to do with him. She’s got Bieber TRs, Bieber DVDs, books… even bottles of perfume with his name on them.
Of course, she’s also got posters of him on her walls. Now, I can understand this (don’t get me wrong – I’m not a fan).
But I think it’s a bit over the top. I mean, a perfume by a pop star – what’s the connection?
Jennifer sent me a photo of her living room and, well, it’s FULL of stuff! Her mum, Julie, is a big collector of little
models of houses and animals – she’s got thousands of them, on shelves all round the walls! I don’t get it. I can’t see
any point in collecting these things – I mean, what does she do, look at them all day?
Jennifer’s brother, Tom, has a collection of old toy cars. He spends hours on the Internet looking at them and when
he has some money, he buys more. I think he’s got about 100. His oldest is over fifty years old, but he’s also got some
new ones – last year’s models. But here’s the strange part – he doesn‘t play with them. In fact he doesn’t even take them
out of the boxes. Why? He says they’re more valuable in the box. Apparently he could sell the oldest cars for hundreds
of pounds! At least I can understand that – one day he can make money from them.
I guess the collection I understand best is my cousin Ben’s. He collects vinyl records and he’s got about 1,000 of
them. They’re wonderful things and they sound great. But he almost never plays them – I’m not even allowed to touch
them!
So, what do you think? Does collecting make you a little bit crazy? Or is it me?
