POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester – Fall Year : 2007

Programme: BE Full Marks : 100
Course: Water Supply Engineering Time : 3hrs.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.
1. a) Describe briefly the various components of water supply scheme with the 7
aid of neat sketch. Elaborate the importance of public water supply
scheme in the present day of civil life.
b) Enumerate the various forms in which ground water occurs in nature. 8
Describe briefly the exploitation of its most important source for rural
water supply scheme.
2. a) Describe the factors affecting Rate of water demand? 5
b) Estimate the domestic water requirement of a town in the year 2010 A.D.
10
by projecting the population of the town by geometrical increase
method. Take per capita water demand = 200 liters / c / day.
Year Population
1940 2,37,98,624
1950 4,69,78,325
1960 5,47,86,437
1970 6,34,67,823
1980 6,90,77,421
3. a) Enumerate the common tests that should be carried out in the 8
examination of water at laboratories. How dissolved oxygen in water can
be determined?
b) What is an intake structure? Enlist all the possible types of intakes. What 7
factors should be considered while selecting a site for an intake.
4. a) Describe in brief the different parts of a slow sand filter with a neat 6
sketch.
b) A rectangular sedimentation basin is to handle 10 million liters/day of 9
raw water. A detention basin of width to length ration of 1/3 is proposed
to trap all particles larger than 0.04mm in sizes. Assuming a relative
density of 2.65 for the particles and 20 oc as the average temperature,
compute the basin dimension. If the depth of the tanks is 3.5cm,
calculate the detention time.
5. a) Describe various types of stream and river crossing with neat sketches. 7
b) How feasibility and detail surveying are performed for a water supply
8
scheme?
6. a) Calculate the storage required to supply the demand shown in the 9
following table if the inflow of water to the reservoir is maintained at a
uniform rate throughout 24 hrs.
Time 00-04 04-08 08-12 12-16 16-20 20-24
Demand(mltrs) 0.48 0.87 1.33 1.00 0.82 0.54
b) Enlist the steps adopted in the construction of pipelines. What type of 6
joint is used for joining cast iron pipe?
7. Write short notes on: (Any Two) 52
a) Break point Chlorination
b) Zeolite process of water softening
c) Reflux values
d) Nepal National Water Supply Policy
