POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester – Fall Year : 2007

Programme: BE Full Marks : 100
Course: Water Resource Engineering II Time : 3hrs.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.
1. a) How do you justify the relevance of hydropower development in 5
Nepal?
b) Determine the probable life of reservoir before its capacity is 10
reduce by 20%. The proposed reservoir has a capacity of 700ha-m.
The catchment area is 200km 2 having an annual runoff and annual
deposition of sediment are 20cm and 0.055 ha-m/km 2 Capacity
inflow ratio and trap efficiency are given below:
Capacity-inflow 0.05 0.07 0.1 0.15 0.25 0.4 0.6 0.8
ratio
Trap 50 60 75 80 86 90 93 95
efficiency, %
2. a) Explain the method employed for the treatment of a faulty dam 7
foundation.
b) What is phreatic line? How would you locate the corrected phreatic 8
line for homogenous dam without drainage?
3. a) A penstock pipe having a diameter of 2.5m supplies water from a 7
head of 150m. There is possibility of 25% increase in the pressure
head due to the transient condition of flow. If the efficiency of joint
and design stress of the pipe material is 85% and 1250kgf/cm 2
respectively. Find the thickness of the penstock pipe.
b) A power station is fed through a 10,000m long concrete lined 8
tunnel of 5m diameter operating under a gross head of 200m. The
discharge through the tunnel is 30m 3/s. A surge tank of 300 sq. m
area has been provided at the end of the tunnel. Calculate :
 Maximum up surge in the tank
 Maximum down surge in the tank.
Assume friction factor for concrete lining as 0.016.
4. a) Define the following terms with neat sketch: 5
 Axis of dam
 Length of dam
 Structural height of dam
 Hydraulic height of dam
b) What is reservoir sedimentation? What steps do you suggest to 5
control the reservoir sedimentation?
c) A run-of-river hydropower station built across a river working at a 5
load factor of 50% and has an installed capacity of 40 MW, which
serves as a peak load station. Find the minimum discharge required
for base load if the available net head on the turbine is 50m with
overall efficiency of 80%.
Find the maximum load factor if the river discharge is 62m 3/s.
5. a) What is spillway? What are the requirements of spillway? Explain 8
the working principle of siphon spillway?
b) Explain the application of micro hydro in the context of Nepal 7
6. a) The electric power produced by a hydropower station 98500kW 8
with net head of 65m. If the speed of a turbine is to be 165rpm with
overall efficiency of 93%, find the number of units and flow
discharge for each unit in that case. When the specific speed of
Kaplan turbine is not exceeded by 295.
b) Classify turbines in accordance with head, discharge and flow 7
direction? Explain the working principle of centrifugal pump.
7. Write short notes on (Any Two) 5×2
a) Reservoir regulation
b) Technical causes of power crisis in Nepal.
c) Operating principles of a governor of a hydro turbine.
