Lesson Proper: Topic 1: Geometric Sequence

This document provides instruction on geometric sequences. It defines a geometric sequence as a sequence where each term after the first is obtained by multiplying the preceding term by a constant ratio. Examples of geometric sequences are provided along with their common ratios. Activities are included for students to determine whether sequences are geometric or not, and to find missing terms and common ratios. The difference between geometric and arithmetic sequences is also explained. Students are instructed to show their work in their activity notebook.

Lesson: Geometric Sequence

Lesson Objectives: at the end of this week, you must able to

• illustrates a geometric sequence; and
• differentiates a geometric sequence from an arithmetic sequence.
Lesson Proper:

Topic 1: Geometric Sequence

A geometric sequence is a sequence where each term after the first is obtained by multiplying the
preceding term by a nonzero constant called the common ratio.

Examples:
1. 2, 6,18, …
This is a geometric sequence because you can know what is next to a certain term by multiplying
one nonzero number. 6 (2nd term) is obtained from 2 (1st term) times 3. 18 (3rd term) is obtained from
6(2nd t term) x 3. This pattern remains throughout the sequence even to the 100th term since the sequence
is infinite (it has no ending). 3 is called the common ratio.

2. 3, 6, 12, 24, 48
It is a geometric sequence with common ratio of 2.
3. 100, 50, 25, …
Notice that the sequence is decreasing. It is different from the first two examples because they
are increasing .It is a geometric sequence with common ratio of 1/ 2. Because 100 divided by 50 is ½ . 25
divided by 25 is ½ .

Not examples:
1. 5, 9, 13, …
It is not geometric sequence because 5 divided by 1 is 5, and 9 divided by 5 is 9/5. There is no
common ratio. It is an arithmetic sequence with Common difference of 4(recall your past lesson).
2. 20, 40, 120, …
It is not geometric sequence. 40 divided by 20 is 2. 120 divided by 20 is 4. There is no common
ratio. It is not also arithmetic sequence because there is no common difference.

The common ratio, r, can be determined by dividing any term in the sequence by the term preceding it.
Examples:
1. In the geometric sequence 2, 4, 8, 16, ... , the common ratio r is 2 since 4 divided by 2 is 2.
2. In the geometric sequence 40, 20, 10, ... ,the common ratio r is ½ since 20 divided by 40 or 10 divided
by 20 is ½ .

2. 5, -10, 20, -40, … ______________________________________
3. 1, 0.6, 0.36, 0.216, … ______________________________________

5. 4, 0, 0, 0, 0, … ______________________________________

2. __________, __________, 32, 64, 128 Common ratio:__________
3. 120, 60, 30, __________, __________ Common ratio:__________
4. 27, 9, __________, __________,1/3 Common ratio:__________
5. 256, __________, __________,-32 , 16 Common ratio:__________

Topic 2: Difference between geometric and arithmetic sequence.

An arithmetic sequence is a sequence where every term after the first is obtained by adding a constant
called the common difference.
A geometric sequence is a sequence where each term after the first is obtained by multiplying the
preceding term by a nonzero constant called the common ratio.
By their definitions, we can see the difference between the two. Arithmetic sequence has a common
difference (obtained by adding) and geometric sequence has common ratio (obtained my multiplying).
To check if a sequence is arithmetic or geometric, let us do the opposite addition, and multiplication. That
is subtraction and division.

Example:
Given: 3, 15, 75, ….
Let us subtract first. 15- 3= 12. 75 – 15 = 60. The differences are not the same so it cannot be arithmetic
sequence.
Let us divide now. 15 divided by 3= 5. 75 divided by 15 = 5. The quotients (or ratio) are the same so it is
geometric sequence.

Activity 3: Determine each of the following whether it is arithmetic sequence or geometric sequence.

1. 3, 9, 27, … ________________________________________
2. 10, 19,28 , … ________________________________________
3. 120, 60, 30, … ________________________________________
4. -3, 9, -27, … ________________________________________
5. 110, 80, 50, … ________________________________________
6. 1/2 , 1, 3/2 , … ________________________________________
7. 1, 1/2,1/4, … ________________________________________
8. 7, 0, -7, … ________________________________________
9. 0, -4, -8, … ________________________________________
10. 0.3, 9/10, 2.7, … ________________________________________

Paalala:
 Isulat ang iyong sagot (pati ang mga tanong at direction) sa mga activity sa iyong Activity Notebook
at huwag kalimutang ilagay ang activity number. (e. g. Activity 1 ) at week number (e.g. Week 1-2)
 Panatilihing malinis ang activity notebook. Erasure means wrong!
 Sa mga activities na nangangailangan ng solution, huwag kalimutang bilugan ang iyong final
answer.
