Tossing of bouquet, slicing of cake, and drinking wine with arms intertwined are just some of the
wedding rituals, we, Filipinos have frequently witnessed. But in the country of Indonesia, specifically in
the Tidong community, there is a wedding ritual where the couple cannot urinate or defecate for three
days and three nights after their marriage. It is said that if they do not follow this tradition, it would bring
their married life bad luck. Some of these are broken marriage, infidelity, or death of their children at a
young age. During this very challenging tradition, the couple will be overlooked at by several people,
specifically their relatives, to ensure that they do not break any of the rules. Also, the couple is not
allowed to leave the house and is fed with only small amounts of food and water to limit the urge to use
the bathroom. After the three-day bathroom ban tradition, they will be surprised by their relatives as they
will be bathed and already can answer the call of nature.
