Circular Motion Practice 1

The document discusses circular motion and centripetal acceleration through 6 practice problems. It addresses the centripetal acceleration of bobsleds on different radius turns, the relationship between radius and acceleration, maximum safe speeds for cars on banked and unbanked turns, the time for blender blades to make one revolution, the ratio of boat speeds for the same centripetal acceleration but different radii, finding the mass of a speed skater given their speed, radius, and centripetal force, and calculating the velocity, acceleration, and tension force on a ball being twirled on a string.

Circular Motion: Practice Problems 1

Physics

1. The bobsled track at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, contained turns with radii of 33 m
and 24 m.

a.) Find the centripetal acceleration at each turn for a speed of 34 m/s, a speed that was
achieved in the 2-man event.

Turn 1

r = 33 m

Turn 2
r = 24 m

b.) What conclusion can you make about the relationship between radius
and acceleration?

c.) Express the acceleration for each turn in multiples of g.

2. Compare the maximum speeds at which a car can safely negotiate an unbanked turn (radius = 50.0
m) in dry weather (coefficient of static friction = 0.9) and icy weather (coefficient of static friction = 0.1).

3. The tips of the blades in a food blender are moving with a speed of 21 m/s in a circle that has a radius
of 0.053 m. How much time does it take for the blades to make one revolution?

(Ans: T = 0.016 s)

4. Speedboat A negotiates a curve whose radius is 120 m. Speedboat B negotiates a curve whose
radius is 240 m. Each boat experiences the same centripetal acceleration. What is the ratio vb/va of the
speeds of the boats?

(Ans: vb/va = 1.41)

5. A speed skater goes around a turn with a 31 m radius. The skater has a speed of 14 m/s and
experiences a centripetal force of 460 N. What is the mass of the skater?

(Ans: m = 72.76 kg)

6. A child is twirling a 12 gram ball on a string in a horizontal circle whose diameter is 0.2 m. The ball
travels once around the circle in 0.5 s.

a.) What is the velocity of the ball?

(Ans: vc =1.26 m/s)

b.) What is the centripetal acceleration of the ball?

(Ans: ac = 15.88 m/s2)

c.) Determine the tension in the string.

(Ans: Fc = 0.19 N)
