Analyzing Power Electronics & Control System On Matlab/Simulink

This document discusses single phase to single phase cycloconverters. It begins by defining a cycloconverter as a device that converts input power at one frequency to output power at a different frequency in a single stage. There are two types: step-down and step-up. The basic topologies used are mid-point and bridge cycloconverters. It provides examples of these configurations for step-up and step-down conversion with resistive and resistive-inductive loads. The document also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of cycloconverters compared to DC link converters and includes Simulink models and output waveforms.

Concept of Cycloconverter
 A device which converts input power at one frequency to output power at different frequency
in a single stage is known as cycloconverter.

 A cycloconverter is basically of two types.

1. Step-down cycloconverter
In this type of cycloconverter the output frequency fo is less than the supply frequency fs.
2. Step-up cycloconverter.
In this type of cycloconverter the output frequency fo is greater than the supply frequency fs.

 The basic topology used for this purpose:

A. Mid-point type cycloconverter
B. Bridge type cycloconverter

Advantages of Cycloconverter
 In a cyclo-converter, ac power at one frequency is converted directly to
the other frequency in a single conversion stage.

 Cyclo-converter is inherently capable of power transfer in either

direction between source and load.

 Cyclo-converter delivers a high quality sinusoidal waveform at low

output frequencies

 Cyclo-converter is extremely attractive for large power, low speed

drives.

9
Disadvantages of Cycloconverter

 Large number of thyristors is required in a cyclo-converter, and its

control circuitry becomes more complex. It is not justified to use it for
small installations, but is economical for units above 20 kVA.

 For reasonable power output and efficiency, the output frequency is

limited to one-third of the input frequency.

 The power factor is low particularly at reduced output voltages, as

phase control is used with high firing delay angle.

10
DC Link Converter

 The cyclo-converter is normally compared with dc link converter, where two power
controllers, first one for converting from ac input at line frequency to dc output, and the
second one as inverter to obtain ac output at any frequency from the dc input fed to it.

 Advantages of DC link converter

 The control circuit here is simpler, as compared to that used in cyclo-converter.

 It has high input power factor, if diode rectifier is used in the first stage.

 The output frequency can be varied from zero to rated value.
