Physics Lesson Plan1

This lesson plan outlines 6 experiments to teach students about the three common states of matter - solid, liquid, and gas. The first experiment demonstrates that a solid object maintains its volume even if its shape changes. The second experiment compares the properties of different solid objects like how they can be crushed, broken, or deformed. The third experiment shows that liquids take the shape of their container. The fourth experiment uses connected syringes to illustrate that liquids maintain their volume but change shape when moved. The fifth experiment with a syringe filled with water shows that liquids are not very compressible. The sixth and final experiment compares the compressibility of gases by pushing and pulling the plunger of a syringe filled with air.

Lesson Plan - Physics

Year 7

Topic: Three common states of matter.

Duration: 45 minutes

Main aims:

1. Students name three common states of matter.

Experiment no. 1: Students find out if solid bodies keep volume when they change
their shape.

Required materials: plasticine, a measuring glass filled with water.

Plan:

- Fill the measuring glass with water and read the volume.

- Put a small plasticine ball into the measuring glass and then read the volume of
water.

- Take the plasticine ball out of water and change its shape, then immerse it again in
the measuring glass, and then read the volume of water and read the volume of
water and the plasticine ball.

Conclusion: The volume of water and the ball does not change.

2. Experiment no. 2. Students study other properties of solid bodies.

Required materials: a piece of chalk, a sponge, plasticine, a rubber band, a spring,

an eye.

Plan:

- Students take each of the objects in their hands and try to crush and break them
etc.
- Students specify the distinguishing characteristic of these objects which will help
differentiate one from another.

Conclusion: Solid bodies feature friability, plasticity and elasticity.

3. Experiment no. 3.Students study the shape of liquid in a vessel.

Required materials: vessels of various shapes.

Plan:

- Fill the vessels with liquid.

- Determine if the same amount of water is in different vessels or if the shape of

water is different.

Conclusion: The liquid takes the shape of the vessel in which it is located, liquids do
not have a certain shape.

4. Experiment no. 4. Students determine the properties of liquids.

Required materials: two syginges connected by a plastic tube. One of the syringes
is filled with water.

Plan:

- Push the plunger of the syringe.

- Determine if the amount of liquid is the same, and what physical quantity has not
unchanged.

Conslusion: The liquid changes its shape but does not change its volume.

5. Experiment no. 5. Students determine the properties of liquids.

Required materials: a syringe, water.

Plan:

- Fill the syringe with water.

- Close the syringe outlet with your finger. Try to move the plunger. Tell the results of
the observation.

Conclusion: The liquids are of low compressibity.

6. Experiment 6. Students study the properties of gases.

Required materials: a syringe with a half-extened plunger.

Plan:

- Close the outlet of the syringe with a finger. Try to move the plunger up and down.
Give the results of the observation.

Conclusion: The gases are compressible and expansible.
