Break it Apart

Presentation
Compare our findings:
Hose Nozzle
Lucy Ostrowski
Main function: To change and
customize water pressure and
shape.

Problem solved: How can I

quickly change between water
pressures and shapes?

Materials: High/low density

polyethylene
LED Lantern
Gigi Vasquez
iPhone
Peter Nebb
Helicopter Toy
Kyle Ramser
1. The point of my object is simply to entertain people.
2. It spins the helicopter blades and flies randomly.
3. Boredom, providing entertainment.
4. It has a battery to provide power, a port to charge the battery, a circuit board to control the
mechanisms, a motor to spin the helicopter blades, lights to make it visible at night, blades to make it
fly, an axle to keep the blades up, and some plastic pieces to balance the device.
5. The device has a switch to turn it on.
6. A small plastic piece, that when flipped turns on the motor and lights using the battery’s power.
7. The switch connects to the circuit board, which allows the battery to power the lights and motor,
which connects to the blades and plastic to spin them and cause the device to fly.
8. Mostly plastic for the outer shell and blades, the battery, the circuit board which is plastic and metal,
and the motor which is mostly metal.
9. They used these materials because plastic is extremely cheap and easy to work with, along with it
being light enough to fly.
10. There are no ID numbers or codes on the device.
Similarities
The connecting themes among all four widely different objects were:

- They were all comprised of multiple parts and mechanisms that

are useless on their own, but prove a purpose when assembled
together.
- They all are enhancements on already existing products
- They are all made of plastic ( polyethylene) materials
- All four objects have one main way to turn them on (button,
switch, handle)
- They all have moving components
Continued:

- All four objects were built to endure falls to some extent

- They all amplify something ( water, light, calls, sound)

- They all needed screwdrivers to take them apart

- They were all non-recyclable, so if we were to re-design these, we

would add that component

What questions do our
objects answer?
● How can I learn about flight without actually flying myself?

● How can I cure my boredom?

● How can I complete multiple tasks with one hose?

● How can I quickly and safely change the water pressure and stream shape?

● How can I carry a source of light with me?

● How can I have a long lasting and sustainable source of light?

Reflection
This group worked well together!

Peaks: Pits:

● Good communication ● Not being able to physically work

● Unique items together
○ Able to challenge each other ● Not having access to the makers’
● Everyone pulls their own weight space
in the project ● Difficulty taking apart items due
● Effective use of time to lack of tools
Thank you!
