CALCULATION OF TOTAL CONNECTED BURDEN TO THE CT:

The performance of the CT depends on the total connected burden at the secondary terminals. The
total burden includes the relay burden, the additional burdens of other devices connected to the CT
incl. the burden of matching transformers (when used), and the burden of secondary wiring.
CT 1:
Name / transf. ratio Burden:
Relay burden: S relay 7SJ8 = 0.1 VA
Sum of add. relay burdens: Sadd = 0 VA
The cable burden is calculated by the single length, the cross section, the specific resistivity for copper
and an effective factor for the wire length. This factor k wire is 2 if the return wire is to be considered.
Cable burden:
Length: lwire =6m
Cross section: awire = 4 mm2
Spec. resistivity (Cu): ρ = 0.02171 Ω mm2/m (Cu at 75 OC)
Sec. wire current: Isr,wire =1A
Eff. wire length in p.u.: kwire =2
k wire     wire
S wire =  (I sr ,wire )
2
= 0.0651 VA
a wire
The total effective burden is given by the sum of all connected burdens:
Total burden: Stotal = Srelay + Sadd + Swire = 0.1651 VA

CALCULATION OF CT ACTUAL CONDITIONS AND CT DIMENSIONING CHECK:

For each considered CT, the dimensioning check is carried out by comparison of the CT actual
operating conditions against the relay actual requirements.
CT 1:
IEC 5P/10P, 5PR/10PR: The actual CT behavior can be described by the operating (actual) accuracy
limiting factor ALFo. This factor depends on the rated accuracy limiting factor ALF r, the rated burden
Sr, the internal CT burden Sct and the total effective actual connected burden Stotal:
S r + S ct
the actual CT ALFo: ALFO = ALFr = 122.036
S total + S ct
where:
ALFr: rated accuracy limiting factor = 30
Sr: rated accuracy burden = 1 VA
Sct: internal CT burden = 0.107 VA
Stotal: total effective connected burden = 0.1651 VA
In order to check whether CT fulfills the relay requirements, the actual CT ALF o is compared to the
required ALF that is calculated using relevant input data for the requirement:
Requirement
the actual CT ALFo:  I 
= 122.036  = 20
meets requirement
RELAY INPUT CAPABILITY CHECK
For each considered CT, the relay input capability check is made by comparison of the maximum
prospective secondary circuit current against relay thermal capacity and, when necessary, the relay

dynamical rating capacity.

As the relay input shall be capable to withstand high secondary currents driven by the CTs during e.g.
close-in faults the following steady-state requirement shall be checked at first:
Irelay,max,th  Imax,CTunsat (Requirement)
where:
Irelay, max,th: maximum thermal withstand current of the relay input (1s, rms)
Imax,CTunsat: maximum possible rms current flowing through the relay input (as driven by unsaturated CT)

RELAY CAPABILITY CHECK FOR CT 1:

The maximum prospective rms current in the secondary circuit (considering unsaturated CT)
Imax,CT,unsat is calculated:
I sr
I max,CT ,unsat = I sc,max = 400
I pr
where:
I sc,max: maximum fault current considered for this CT = 20 kA
I pr: rated primary CT current = 50 A
I sr: rated secondary CT current =1A
Therefore for CT 1:
Requirement :
Irelay,max,th = 500 A  Imax,CT,unsat = 400 A meets requirement

Current transformer is correctly dimensioned
