I. INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Student's daily routine in school and in work makes them tired and stressful. Student's job become a sort of trend

among students who want to work while they were studying. Time is a priceless resource and continues to pass by without

coming back. The secret to achieve success in life is effectively managing this resource that everyone posseses equally

and paying sufficient emphasis to plan.

The term "time management" became familiar in the 1950' s and 1960's as referring to a tool to help managers

make better use of available time. Time is seen as a indefinitely divisible and usable commodity. Time management is the

process of planning and controlling over amount of time spent in activities to increase effectiveness and efficiency of

work.

When we think about time management, it implies that there's a degree of decision-making involved, which

include setting goals and priorities, manipulating resources, monitoring progress, and taking responsibility for the

outcome. There are basically three surface of time management behaviours which are start range planning, long range

planning and time attitudes. Short range planning appears to encompass a variety of items that require planning in the

short run, either within the day or within the week. Time attitudes is more attitudinal in nature. Long range planning

competence is to handle everyday jobs over a longer time perspective by keeping follow of significant dates and setting

objectives by putting adjournment.

Students often complaint they do not have enough time to complete all the tasks assigned to them. In trying to

read all the books and chapters assigned, meet paper deadlines, and participate in extracurricular activities, students may

become overwhelmed with feeling that there is not enough time to complete all their work adequately.

A huge advantage of working while studying is that you are exposed to a working life activities very early. This

offers you to have a great sense of responsibility a very early stage. None of this would be possible if you are unable to

manage your time wisely. It is just a question of discipline and how to determined you are to achieve your goals. Proper

time management skills can lessen your aches and troubles in your senior high school life. Some are lucky enough to be

blessed with teachers who teach them the ways of proper management of time. But for the most, it is left up to them to

learn about it the difficult way.

1
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

3
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focused on the time management on working senior high school students in San Carlos Preparatory

School. It was delimited to the senior high school students enrolled during the school year 2019- 2020.

Descriptive survey method using questionnaire was used as a data gathering instrument. The survey was floated to

the identified working students in San Carlos Preparatory School. The total number of respondents was 20.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

The terms used in this study gives a very clear and precise explanation about the items.

Time management- the process of planning and exercising conscious control of time spent on specific activities,

especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity.

Students- a person formally engaged in learning, especially one enrolled in a school or college

Sex- either the male or female division of a species, especially as differentiated with reference to the reproductive

functions.

Civil Status- corresponds to your family situation. It can mean being single, married, in a civil union, adopted, divorced, a

member of a single-parent family, or any form of family ties or affinity with another person.

4
II. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Good practices of time management can be central to academic success (George Dixon, Stansal Gelb and Pheri,

2008), and strategies aimed at improving the effective use of time are often recommended as an aid to enhance the

achievement of students. (Misra andMcKean,2000). George Dixon, Stansal Gelb and Pheri (2008), found that time

management significantly predicted academic success. Managing of this over-flowing time is decidedly the ability of one

to direct himself , and all other activities and to use time more effective. While students who manages time well

undoubtedly achieve a higher level of performance, their achievements also gives them the greater sense of self-esteem.

Life is more enjoyable without stress of a huge task list lingering on the back of your mind. Confidence soars with higher

grades, and students carries those effective time management skills and learning habits into the work world.

Time Management for Working Students

By Kelli Cooper

Time management can be a challenge when you are juggling work and school. Whether you are working to put

yourself through college or you are someone who is going back to school to advance your current career, managing time

in your professional and academic life is no easy task, especially when you have additional responsibilities competing for

your time, such as raising children. The problem is not a lack of time—it's how people manage that time that matters the

most.

Here are some tips to help you make better use of your time while trying to juggle your job and your studies.

1. Make a Schedule

The suggestion to make a schedule is always near the top of the list when it comes to time management tips, and there

is a good reason…it works. If you have been previously ignoring this good advice, I have included it here again in hopes

you will reconsider. When we are totally planning our day inside our head without making any concrete plans, it is all too

easy to forget things, prioritize poorly or feel overwhelmed and just do nothing. I speak from personal experience when I

say do not underestimate the power of planning and writing that plan down.

Creating order is the first step in successfully managing your time, and making a schedule helps create order.1 Write

out your day in 30-minute chunks and start by filling in all the set events that are not flexible, like class times and work.

This will help give you a clearer picture of what you have to work with in terms of setting up times to study and tend to

the other responsibilities in your life. Again, this obviously simple piece of advice may be dismissed because of its very

simplicity, but it is one of the most effective things you can do, provided you actually stick to the schedule you make as

best you can.

5
2. Learn to Sacrifice : You work hard and you deserve some time to unwind and relax, whether that involves zoning

out and watching a couple of your favorite TV shows or a nice long bath. You should always allow yourself that time, it is

an important part of succeeding since you want to avoid burnout.3 With that being said, you have to accept that

sometimes you may need to forego this do-nothing time or cut it short.

You may feel stressed and overworked, and you tell yourself that you deserve a break after working hard all day; you

may feel justified in watching four hours of television instead of starting that research paper outline you have been putting

off the last week. It is important to remember that you don't need to take an "all or nothing" approach. Instead of indulging

in something that doesn't really contribute to your progress (like binge-watching your favorite show), instead focus on

taking a short break that will allow you to refocus. That way you can feel refreshed and productive when you return to the

task at hand.

Again, you are entitled to pleasure in your life, but if you are trying to achieve a larger goal of advancing your career

or making a better life for you and your children, this requires discipline.4 If pursuing your dream job means watching a

bit less TV or fewer videos on YouTube, then it can be worth the sacrifice.

3.Work on Reducing Procrastination

Humans are a funny bunch, and we often procrastinate doing the things that really need to get done sooner than

later; usually, the tasks are less than thrilling, such as doing the reading for your most boring class or tackling that

research paper that accounts for a large chunk of your grade.

People tend to think of all that they have to do to get from start to finish and then become overwhelmed. Because

the problem seems too big to tackle, people end up simply doing nothing. Then the anxiety builds as we think about how

we still have to do it and again, instead of starting, we put it off again.5 To alleviate the guilt about putting it off, they do

other stuff, often household tasks like laundry, to make it seem like they are accomplishing something.

Rather than becoming overwhelmed by what seems like an insurmountable project, start somewhere to get

something small done. Once you break up a big project into smaller and more manageable steps, it is easy to accomplish

and you will feel more motivated to continue.

Procrastination and effective time management do not go well together for most people.1 However, there are

things that you can do to reduce this tendency.

Remind yourself of the consequences of inaction. It always helps to think of all the negative things that will result

from you putting off your schoolwork until the last possible minute. It will almost certainly be worse than actually doing

what it is you are supposed to be doing, no matter how difficult or boring it may seem.

How to Manage Time As a Working Student?

As if college itself wasn’t hard enough, there’s plenty of students who need to work in addition to studying. The

expenses are great and many of you simply don’t have a choice but to work in order to cover them. Depending on the type

of job you’re doing, time management could surface as a problem. How can you organize your time in order to get

everything done? Is it possible to work and be a great student?

We believe it is possible and that, with a little effort and planning you can get everything done. You just need to

learn the art of time management and focus on staying organized. The good news is- we’re here to help you with that.

Take a look at the basic strategies of time management and how you can do it all.

Prioritize. If you are a working student, there’s one thing we need to get straight right away: school comes first.

This means that you need to start your time management strategy by dealing with the school schedule.Look at your

calendar and make sure to mark all the important school dates: project deadlines, exam dates, homework assignments,

school events. Having your school tasks all in one place, you can rest assured things are under control. Now you need to

find a way to build your work schedule around the school schedule and make it all fit together. How can you do that?

Check it out.

Negotiate. A great deal of your time management depends on your employer and your colleagues from work. You

need to establish healthy relationships with all of them, so as to be able to negotiate your shifts and even days-off.You

need to have them on board when you need: a day off to study for a major exam, to change shifts so as to attend a school

event, to adapt your schedule according to school obligations. You can achieve this by applying negotiation skills and

nurturing and open communication at the workplace. Remember, you need to give something in return, not just ask. Be

available to jump in for your colleagues when they need it and walk the extra mile when your employer asks you to.

Be efficient. Since time is your major issue, you need to find ways to save it.In order to avoid doing the same

thing twice, you need to make the best use out of the time spent in the classroom. If you’re able to learn while listening,

you’ll be able to minimize your study hours. So, how can you be maximally efficient in classes? You need to:take notes

about the most important information, actively participate in the lesson, ask all the questions which come to your mind

immediately, stay focused and alertThis saves you at least a couple of hours per subject when study time kicks in. In other

words, it’s a life-saver for students who work.

Don’t procrastinate. Once you finally get home and grab the time to study, you need to be 100% focused and

make the best use of it.How can you avoid procrastinating? Well, you need to get rid of all the distractions: turn the TV

off , leave your phone outside of the room, have a clean study desk with only the essentials, have some water and a

healthy snack alongside . Don’t make excuses such as: “I’ll just check my phone for a second” or “Let me just take a look

at this one YouTube video”. We all know how that ends.

7
Be productive and study for as long as your concentration allows you. Unfortunately, you don’t have the luxury of

wasting your time scrolling through social media and texting your friends. Fill out the gaps. There might be some free

time hidden in places where you don’t see it. Use this time to read or study, to ensure you get everything done on time.

For example, you can study: in the bus/train on the way to work , on lunch brakes, while waiting in lines. Of

course, not everyone has the power to shut off from the rest of the world and stay focused with all the noise around. Still,

if you do master this skill, it will save you a lot of time and help you be a better student.

Study time. Sometimes it’s best to organize everything to the smallest detail in order to maintain your study

habits.Time-management is all about planning. You need to have a set time for studying planned in your schedule every

week. Make sure to respect it even though you’re the only one controlling it. Avoid:changing it last minute, skipping

sessions, shortening it

Be strict and respect your own rules. It will help you make room for some free time and enjoy the rest of the day.

You’ll notice that, once you take control of your time, even though you’re working and studying, there’ll be some room

for fun, relaxation and enjoying.Your free time is extremely important for the whole time-management process. You need

to use it wisely and fully enjoy it. Don’t spend your free time just lying around and doing nothing. Use it to take care of

yourself: socialize, eat healthy food, sleep well, exercise, listen to music, be outdoors

Do whatever it is that makes you happy and treat yourself with your favorite activities. Share this time with your

loved ones and you’ll stay healthy- both mentally and physically.

Final thoughts. Let’s face it- it’s not easy. It takes a lot of hard work, persistence, self-control, and organization to

make it work. Your job and your school can be in the same picture, but you just need to go to a bit further to achieve it.

Try listening to our advice about time-management. Work on putting all the pieces together and building a system of your

own. Listen to your mind and your body and allow them to take a break when they need it. This will help you set your

own pace and make the best use out of your time.
