SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Critical thinking involves a set of skills that help us to evaluate information, arguments,
problems, inquires and opinions in a systematic and thoughtful way.

Objective:

This activity is intended to enhance critical thinking and explain how the scientific
method has actually been used to solve scientific problems and evaluate arguments, inquiries
and opinions.

Procedure: Select one news article from the newspapers or online resources about local
environmental issues, development or new discoveries. Analyze and evaluate the
environmental issues or news using the scientific methods. Attached the chosen article or news
and cite your sources.

Based on you selected article answer the following questions:

1. Identify the problem.


Deforestation is one of the major environmental issue in the Philippines. It is said
that the forest cover in the Philippines dropped from 70% to 20%. According to an
analysis almost 9.8 million hectares were lost.

2. How did they research for the problem? What methods were used?

The methods they used to collect data regarding this issue is through observation
and analysis.

3. What are the hypotheses?

a. Reforestation can be made possible through biofertilizer.

b. Through the use of biotechnology, it can find a way to solve the issue of deforestation
in the Philippines

4. What are the experiments made?

a. DENR through the support of Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau


(ERDB), use a biofertilizer to be tested in the plants that helps absorb the water.

b. The ERDB tried to use the advancement of technology to produce quality planting
materials of indigenous forest trees.

5. Did the experiment prove or disprove the hypothesis/es?

a. The experiment proves that through biofertilizer that they developed, it can help the
plants to become more healthier and immune in different kinds of disease.

b. The use of technology proves that it is possible to developed solutions for major
issues such as biotechnology that make a way for the discovery of Hi-Q Vam 1.

6. What is/are the conclusion/s?

Deforestation is considered one of the major issues in the Philippines for a long time.
Different organizations such as DENR or Department of Environment and Natural
Resources seeks solution regarding this problem. Aside from implementing policies
regarding cutting of trees and continuous planting, reforestation will be made possible
through biofertilizer. ERDB developed Hi-Q Vam 1 which is a biofertilizer that attaches to the
root and provides as an extension so that the plants can better absorb the water making
them healthier and strengthening their immunity against diseases.
