1. What are the correction factors required in the Bell Delaware method to calculate shell side heat
transfer coefficient. Explain briefly. You may denote diametral leakage clearance between the
shell diameter and the baffle diameter as Lsb, diametral leakage clearance between the baffle hole
and the tube diameter (do) as Ltb, and tube pitch as Pt. Total number of tubes are Nt. Using the
figure given below, derive the mathematical expressions to calculate a)the fraction of number of
tubes in one baffle window, b)leakage area between shell and baffle, c)leakage area between
baffle hole and tube. [8]

2. Consider the condensation over vertical plate having length L. The condensation number(Co)
is given in terms of Reynold’s number (Re) by following expression;
.
0.008
Using the above equation derive the following expression for Nusselt number(Nu);
7.9 10
.
μ
Where, Tg and Tw are vapor saturation temperature and plate temperature, respectively. All
other terms have their usual meaning. [8]
3. Draw a neat sketch of once through thermosyphon reboiler. How do you calculate the driving
force for flow through this reboiler? Where are frictional losses occurring during the operation
of once through thermosyphon reboiler and how will you determine those losses. [6]
4. Water is to be boiled at atmospheric pressure in a polished copper pan by means of an electric
heater. The diameter of the pan is 0.38 m and is kept at 115o C. Take the physical properties of
the system from any book or internet resources and write them on your answer sheet.
Calculate the followings; [10]
a) Surface heat flux, b) Power required to boil the water, c) Rate of evaporation d)Critical heat flux
5. A forward feed triple effect vertical tube evaporator is to be used to concentrate a solution from
4% solids to 35 % solids. Each effect has heating surface area equal to 140 m2. The boiling point
elevation of the solution is neglected. Steam is available at 120oC and the vacuum in the last
effect corresponds to a boiling temperature of 40 oC. The overall heat transfer coefficients are
2950, 2670 and 1360 W/m2 oC in effect I, II and III, respectively. All specific heats may be taken
as 4.2 J/g oC. Condensates leave at condensing temperature. The feed enters at 90oC. Determine
the feed rate (kg/h) that can be concentrated and steam consumption (kg/h). Perform the
calculations only for one iteration. [14]
6. Design a kettle type reboiler to vaporise 2500 kg/h n-butane at 5.84 bar. The minimum
temperature of the feed will be 5 oC. Steam is available at 1.70 bar. Take the physical property
data from book or internet resources and write them on your answer sheet. Perform the
calculations only for one iteration. [14]
