Interpreting Information Presented in A Pie Graph: Let Us Learn!
Let Us Try!
In the past, you may have encountered pie graphs in the news, articles, books,
etcetera. Let us try to assess your previous knowledge about it. Look at the pie
graph below. Examine the information presented in the pie graph. Analyze by answering

4. Based on the graph, is there any other device to use in accessing the internet?
5. What’s the difference (in percentage) between the users’ preference in accessing the
internet using a smartphone and a laptop?
The graph above shows the results of a survey in which people aged sixteen and over were
asked about their preferred devices for accessing the internet. The question referred to going
online at home and in other places. The participants mentioned four main devices in their
answers: a smartphone, a laptop, a tablet, and a desktop computer.

smartphones and laptops, with just three percent difference between the two. Nearly a third

desktop computer accounts for fourteen percent of users’ preferred devices. Only a small

as shown in the slice that is relative to the data being presented in the pie.
It is not so hard, isn’t it? You just have to get the data presented in the pie and interpret it
by answering corresponding questions or by writing paragraphs.

1. Among how many items are the expenses of an average Filipino family?
2. Which of these expenses receives the largest share? Which one receives the least?
4. What does this show you about the priorities in an average Filipino family?
Let Us Remember!
While there are other types of graphs, you must remember the specific purpose of
using pie graphs. It is important to remember that pie graphs are useful only for
comparing proportions, that is looking at parts of a whole. If you are interested on other aspects
such as trends or frequencies, then other types of graphs or charts may be more appropriate.
Picture yourself as the business manager of your class. Your class president gave
you P500 and you were tasked to prepare a project using the amount. Present this in a pie
graph by indicating the percentage of the budget needed for the project. Slice the pie
below by drawing lines to show your answer. Afterwards, answer the following questions.
1. How many items or things do you need to make the project based on the allocated
amount?
2. Which of these items would need the largest share of amount? Which one gets least?
3. Prior to this lesson, were you able to appropriately allocate budget on your allowance?
4. Is it important to budget your allowance for school needs? Explain your answer.
5. Did this lesson help improve your knowledge on pie graphs and its relevance on your day-
to-day life as a student? Explain your answer.
Let Us Reflect On This!
Congratulations on accomplishing this activity sheet! You have gained another learning
experience even being at home.
Learning how to budget our allowances in school is a tough task for students at
your age considering that there are lots of things you want to buy to satisfy and entertain
yourself. However, to be a responsible young student, you must learn how to be thrifty. You need
to distinguish between what you need and what you want and have a rational judgment what to
buy and what not to buy. This lesson greatly helps you to wisely spend your money. Look at
every part of a whole. Always remember that successful people know how to spend their money
according to what they need. It always starts on the little things. So as a student, spend your
allowance wisely and be successful someday.
Continue to have fun while you learn!
