Standard Form: Standard Form Is A System of Writing Numbers Which Can Be Particularly Useful For Working With Very
Standard form is a system of writing numbers which can be particularly useful for working with very
large or very small numbers. It is based on using powers of 10 to express how big or small a number is.
Standard form is written in the form of a ×10 n, where a is any real number greater than or equal to 1 and
less than 10.
Scientists use standard form when working with the speed of light and distances between galaxies, which
can be enormous. The size of bacteria or atoms may also be referred to in standard form as they are so
tiny. Standard form is also sometimes referred to as scientific notation.
The rules when writing a number in standard form is that first you write down a number between 1 and
10, then you write ×10 n.
Example
Write 81 900 000 000 000 in standard form: 81 900 000 000 000 = 8.19 × 1013
It is 1013 because the decimal point has been moved 13 places to the left to get the number to be 8.19
Example
It is 10-6 because the decimal point has been moved 6 places to the right to get the number to be 1.2
34 × 107 is not written in standard form as the first number is not between 1 and 10. To correct this, we
need to divide 34 by 10. To balance out the division of 10, we also need to multiply the second part by 10,
which gives 108.
34 × 107 and 3 . 4 × 108 are equal in value, but only the second is written in standard form.
