Example1.
Solve the equation 𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 − 𝟖𝟖𝟖𝟖 = 𝟎𝟎.
Solution:
𝑥𝑥 2 − 81 = 0 Add 81 both sides
𝑥𝑥 2 = 81 Square Root Property
𝑥𝑥 = ±√81
𝑥𝑥 = ±9
Answer: The equations 𝑥𝑥 2 − 81 = 0 has two solutions: 𝑥𝑥 = 9 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑥𝑥 = −9
5
Example 2.
Solve the equation 𝟐𝟐𝒙𝒙𝟐𝟐 = 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏.
Solution:
2𝑥𝑥 2 = 16
𝑥𝑥 2 = 8 Divide both sides by 2
𝑥𝑥 = ±√8 Square Root Property
𝑥𝑥 = ±2√2 Simplify √8 (√8 = √4 ∙ 2 = 2√2)
Example 3.
Solve the equation 𝒕𝒕𝟐𝟐 = 𝟎𝟎.
Since 𝑡𝑡 2 equals 0, then the equation has only one solution.
That is, 𝑡𝑡 = 0.
Answer: The equation 𝑡𝑡 2 = 0 has one solution: 𝑡𝑡 = 0.
Example 4.
Find the roots of the equation 𝑠𝑠 2 + 9 = 0.
Solution:
𝑠𝑠 2 + 9 = 0
𝑠𝑠 2 = −9 Write the equation in the form 𝑥𝑥 2 = 𝑐𝑐.
Since −9 is less than 0, then the equation 𝑠𝑠 2 = −9 has no real
solutions or roots. Then there is no real number when squared gives −9.
