1. Electrical Drives- An Introduction
1. Explain the functions of various converters.
2. What are the advantages of electrical drives?
3. List out different selection criteria for the electrical drive.
4. Draw a block diagram of an electrical drive and explain each block function.

2. Modelling of DC Machines
1. Explain state space modeling of DC motor drive with block diagram.
2. How to measure motor constants? Explain it in detail.
3. Explain shunt motor with its torque-speed characteristics.
4. A series operated DC machine has 1.5 HP, 220V, 1600 rpm, armature resistance of 3Ω, field resistance of 1Ω,
frictional coefficient of 0.002 Nm/(rad/sec) and mutual inductance of 0.0675H. Find (i) air gap torque (ii)
armature current (iii) armature voltage.
5. The separately excited DC machine has rating of 1200 KW, 500V, 2200 A, 400 rpm with brush drop of 3V,
field power 35KW and armature resistance of 0.003Ω. It has variable armature voltage and fixed field
current. Derive (i) Frictional torque with frictional coefficient 10 Nm/(rad/sec) (ii) Back EMF constant (iii)
Input power (iv) Efficiency.
3. Control of DC Drives
1. Explain operation of a closed loop position control scheme. What are the roles of inner current control and
speed control loops?
2. Explain modes of operation of an electrical drive.
3. Classify the drive. Which requirements are satisfied by feedback loops in an electrical drive?
4. Chopper Controlled DC Motor Drive
1. Explain chopper principle used in electrical drive with circuit, waveform and equation.
2. Explain Four quadrant operation in DC motor chopper drive.
3. Explain design and modelling of current controller for DC motor chopper drive.
4. Explain Pulse-Width-Modulation controller of dc motor chopper drive.
5. Explain PWM and HCC hysteresis chopper based closed operation of DC motor drive.

5. Frequency Controlled Induction Motor Drive


1. Explain single and multi pulse-modulation.
2. Explain modified McMurray inverter for induction motor drive.
3. Find the relationship between the DC link voltage and the stator frequency for the closed loop
implementation of Volts/Hz inverter fed induction motor drive. The motor parameters are as follow:

2. Explain working theory of DC servo motor.
3. Explain working theory of brushless DC motor.
4. Write down features of stepper motor and explain torque versus stepping rate characteristics.
