2) OBJECTIVES
The number of shopping malls has been increasing in the country particularly in Lusaka over the
years influenced by the growing congestion, traffic problems and the desire to be accessible to
consumers. This development is usually associated with positive effects such as the creation of
jobs for local people brought about by multinational chain stores that offer quality goods and
services.
Hence the problem being addressed in this study despite the existence of several significant
motives of constructing a shopping mall in the city of Lusaka, there exists consequences of that
development which deems this topic controversial because in a country where small business are
considered as the center of economic growth and employment ambitions, shopping malls present
a threat.
Shopping malls in Lusaka have a serious impact on retail businesses, Retail business is a source
of survival to the considerable sections of the community in the city of Kollam as they contribute
income generation and employment (Neethu Mathews 2018), therefore the increased competition
from mega shopping malls has seriously affected the small retail business profitability, growth
and jobs hence the small business near the university of Lusaka are no exception. IBID studies
indicate that 75% of businesses located less than 1km from a new shopping mall report decline
in profits owing to the shopping mall and that business situated further from the Mall are less
affected. According to Mathews (2018), it is important to understand the impact that
development of Mega shopping malls has on small businesses because these big shopping malls
have huge capital, labor and other infrastructural facilities. This would further increase the
difficulty for competent small businesses. With the impact of big shopping malls on small
businesses vivid to the public eye, an evaluation of this impact on small businesses is what this
research aims to achieve.
