Pacific Steamship Navigation Company

Census of Covers, Used Stamps and Proofs

There have been several previous censuses of the PSNC stamps; Moll1, Barrington-Brown2,
Kelly3, Ringström4 to name a few. However, these were all done before the advent of the internet, when
it was difficult to acquire and share images. Without an image, it is very difficult to discern the
differences between stamps with the same type of cancel. This new census has attempted to acquire
actual images from published sources as well as individual collectors.

A few of these items have been identified as forgeries by expertizing services or individual
authors. I have elected to include them in the census for the simple reason that many other similar
items may also be forgeries. It is almost impossible to discern forgeries from images, without being able
to examine the actual stamp and compare it to reference collection items. Since so few of these items
have survived, it is also difficult to obtain legitimate reference copies for comparison. Where others
have declared or suspected an item of being a forgery, I have included that information in the census.
There are undoubtedly more forgeries in this census, but they have not previously been described as
such in auction catalogs or other publications.

I suspect there are more items that could be added to this census. In addition, the quality of
some of the images is not very good. Therefore, I would appreciate any information that others might
have on any of these stamps, stamps that should be added to this census or simply better images. You
