SCHEDULE OF OUTPUTS FOR

PLANNING
This schedule has been compiled to assist in the calculation of activity durations for construction
planning. The rates are listed in CCPI format to assist with quick and systematic referencing
consistent with industry standard documentation.

The majority of the rates included have been drawn from notes complied by members of the Planning
Department over a number of years.

Limitations
The rates are not meant to offer definitive answers to each construction activity situation. In some
cases there is reference to the basis of the rates, e.g. small rooms, 2000m2 etc.

The rates are generally given in units per hour per man unless otherwise stated.

The rates should be used as a starting point for assessment of probable outputs for labour and plant
on the activity under consideration and an air of caution should be exercised for each project specific
operation, but if in doubt please contact your Regional Planning Department.

Best Practice
In order to maintain this document as a comprehensive technical reference manual, we will be issuing
updated revisions on a regular basis. We would be grateful for any feedback from your own
experiences as it becomes available for inclusion in future issues.

TOWER CRANES

General Notes

A Tower Crane is not always the answer to multi-storey building, it can at times be a very expensive
luxury. It is only a crane when all is said and done, and it will not necessarily make the job go any
faster. (The rate of progress is generally governed by the amount of shuttering allocated to the job,
and concrete outputs).

For a crane to be a proposition, the work must lend itself to,

a) Large shuttering panels or

b) Large scale precast work either in floors or cladding units.
c) Prefabrication of other items e.g. reinforcement, scaffolding, packaged bricks etc.

In addition, due to high installation costs, a Tower Crane is rarely an economical proposition under 5-
6 months work on Site, at 5 months the installation costs have been known to equal the hire charge
over that period.

Subject to the above conditions however, a Tower Crane, properly used, is a must on high and
sometimes not so high buildings.

There are two main types of crane:-

1) Travelling crane - on rails alongside the building suitable for buildings up to approximately 80’0”
wide with full coverage, and a large handling area within its reach.
2) Climbing or Static crane - located fairly centrally within the building, Suitable where a travelling
crane would not reach across the building (i.e. on wide buildings) and also on very high
buildings where excessive tying-in of a travelling crane and the length of mast would rule out
the latter. With this type of crane the handling area is restricted and in all cases must be very
close to the building. Also maximum coverage is not always possible. With a building of
suitable dimensions, more than one crane may be warranted.

Crane performance can be very much affected by high winds, especially at higher levels.

It is equally important to assess what operations not to perform by crane, as unnecessary items will
obviously slow down the work-cycle.

Page 51
TOWER CRANE WORKLOADING

The working day of a crane is calculated by the number of lifts it has to perform, the following times
can be used as a basis for the various types of lift.

Concrete columns 6 minutes per lift

Concrete slabs 4 minutes per lift
Column shutters 10 minutes per lift
Storey height wall shutters 15 minutes per lift
Small precast units 10 minutes per lift
Large precast units 20 minutes per lift
Reinforcement (Avge 5 cwt) 5 minutes per lift
Sundry (bricks, loose
shutters etc.) 5 minutes per lift

Offloading

Reinforcement (Avge 10 cwts) 4 minutes per lift

Large precast units 6 minutes per lift
Generally 4 minutes per lift

Add 10% for sundries

A 20% allowance to be added to the above times for output efficiency.

e.g. to pour 20yc of concrete using an 18/12 mixer, which has a batch capacity of 12 cu.ft. This
would be 1 lift and  each cu.yd. would take an average of 2¼ lifts.

So total lifts for 20 yc = 20 x 2¼ = 45 lifts

@ 4 minutes = 180 minutes

+ 20% efficiency = 36

Total crane time 216 minutes

or 3 hours 36 mins.
say 3½ hours

On this basis the total work load for each day can be built up to the number of hours available.

Weights for calculating safe working loads of plant & equipment

1. In calculating the maximum safe load for lifting equipment such as cranes or forklift trucks, the
following weights may be useful as a guide:-

½ cu. yd.(0.38m3) skip full of concrete 23 cwt.(1168 kg)

1 cu. yd.(0.76m3) skip full of concrete 45 cwt.(2286 kg)

Pack of 200 bricks 12-15 cwt.(700 kg)

Pack of 250 bricks 15-19 cwt.(860 kg)

Pack of 48 lightweight concrete

blocks 450 x 225 x 100 8-10 cwt.(457 kg)

Pack of 48 dense concrete blocks

450 x 225 x 100 20 cwt.(1016 kg)

Spreader bar and chains for p.c.c.

units up to approx. 5080 kg 2 cwt.(102 kg)

Lifting beam for concrete units

weighing approx. 7112 kg 8-10 cwt.(457 kg)

2.4m high wall shutter complete with

all supports, props and working platforms 64 kg per. f.r.

Precast reinforced concrete units 64 kg / 0.0283m3

2. It is generally recommended that the maximum weight to be lifted at any radius should not
exceed 90% of the capacity of the machine at that radius.
