PLANNING
This schedule has been compiled to assist in the calculation of activity durations for construction
planning. The rates are listed in CCPI format to assist with quick and systematic referencing
consistent with industry standard documentation.
The majority of the rates included have been drawn from notes complied by members of the Planning
Department over a number of years.
Limitations
The rates are not meant to offer definitive answers to each construction activity situation. In some
cases there is reference to the basis of the rates, e.g. small rooms, 2000m2 etc.
The rates are generally given in units per hour per man unless otherwise stated.
The rates should be used as a starting point for assessment of probable outputs for labour and plant
on the activity under consideration and an air of caution should be exercised for each project specific
operation, but if in doubt please contact your Regional Planning Department.
Best Practice
In order to maintain this document as a comprehensive technical reference manual, we will be issuing
updated revisions on a regular basis. We would be grateful for any feedback from your own
experiences as it becomes available for inclusion in future issues.

TOWER CRANES
General Notes
A Tower Crane is not always the answer to multi-storey building, it can at times be a very expensive
luxury. It is only a crane when all is said and done, and it will not necessarily make the job go any
faster. (The rate of progress is generally governed by the amount of shuttering allocated to the job,
and concrete outputs).
In addition, due to high installation costs, a Tower Crane is rarely an economical proposition under 5-
6 months work on Site, at 5 months the installation costs have been known to equal the hire charge
over that period.
Subject to the above conditions however, a Tower Crane, properly used, is a must on high and
sometimes not so high buildings.
1) Travelling crane - on rails alongside the building suitable for buildings up to approximately 80’0”
wide with full coverage, and a large handling area within its reach.
2) Climbing or Static crane - located fairly centrally within the building, Suitable where a travelling
crane would not reach across the building (i.e. on wide buildings) and also on very high
buildings where excessive tying-in of a travelling crane and the length of mast would rule out
the latter. With this type of crane the handling area is restricted and in all cases must be very
close to the building. Also maximum coverage is not always possible. With a building of
suitable dimensions, more than one crane may be warranted.
Crane performance can be very much affected by high winds, especially at higher levels.
It is equally important to assess what operations not to perform by crane, as unnecessary items will
obviously slow down the work-cycle.
Page 51
TOWER CRANE WORKLOADING
The working day of a crane is calculated by the number of lifts it has to perform, the following times
can be used as a basis for the various types of lift.
Offloading
e.g. to pour 20yc of concrete using an 18/12 mixer, which has a batch capacity of 12 cu.ft. This
would be 1 lift and each cu.yd. would take an average of 2¼ lifts.
On this basis the total work load for each day can be built up to the number of hours available.

Weights for calculating safe working loads of plant & equipment
1. In calculating the maximum safe load for lifting equipment such as cranes or forklift trucks, the
following weights may be useful as a guide:-
2. It is generally recommended that the maximum weight to be lifted at any radius should not
exceed 90% of the capacity of the machine at that radius.
