1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 General
Anmol Piling & Steel Structures LLC. have prepared the present document concerning the
project of the Malaysia Pavilion Dubai 2020 to provide below ground area shoring for the
preparation and construction of basement structure.

This preliminary design report presents the design parameters, design criteria and
methodologies proposed to be adopted for the structural design of temporary retaining
wall.

1.2 Scope
The scope includes the design of the temporary retaining wall (KING POST SHORING) while
construction of basement structure work proceeded.

CASE OF EXCAVATION CONSIDERED AND MODEL FOR ANALYSIS

CASE 1:
The Maximum Excavation Level is -5.00m from Existing Ground Level = +0.00 m. Spacing of
steel beams is 2.00m center to center spacing.

4 OTHER DESIGN PARAMETERS

4.1 Ground Characterization

The data of soil and recommendation provided by Technical Laboratory for Matrix Laboratory LLC.,
Report No.: XSD/15-0143, Dated September 15, 2015 will be used and modeled in the design with
respect to our desk study for the parameters of soil.
Geotechnical borings drilled inside the site indicates that the subsurface stratigraphy is relatively
uniform.
Soil properties of individual layes for the design are shown on the table below:

upto -12.00m. for conservative design.
Ground water was encountered in all boreholes at the highest depth of -14.00m below ground level as
per Technical Lab.
The SPT N values is linearly increasing with depth. The angle of internal friction is chosen
conservatively according to soil report and based on our desk study.
The soil strata and the corresponding properties may be traced easily from programme data as given
in REWARD Analysis output result.

PAGE #5/29
4.4 Design of Retaining Wall
The earth pressure coefficients are based on Coulomb for the at-rest, active and passive states and
the method used and choose the depth of embedment with partial factor is a Strength Factor
Method. Horizontal earth pressures for the stabilty analysis are obtained from Reward Analysis
program.
The stabilty for Factor Safety is 1.5 is used to determine the critical embedment length.

CASE OF SHORING ANALYSIS HAS BEEN CONSIDERED:

DESIGN OF CANTILEVER KING POST PILE SHORING FOR MAXIMUM EXCAVATION LEVEL OF -
CASE 1:
5.00m FROM EGL. +0.00m.

Cantilever king post shoring was adopted as the most cost-effective solution for this boundary. This
wall consist of steel section UB 457x191x74 kg/m or equivalent section with 4.00 meter embedment
depth below bulk excavation level to accommodate the lateral pressure by soil and surcharge loading.

Table 2.
Bending Moment, Shear Force & Deflection of individual sections for the design are shown on the
table below:

Service Spacing Maximum Average

Section Bending Moment [m.] Bending Moment Deflection
[kN.m./m.] [kN.m.] [cm.]
1 -151.30 2.00 453.90 2.40

The Factor of Safety produced and resulted in The Reward Analysis is equal to SF= 677%,
therefore the embedment length is suitable for the excavation depth.

4.5 Factor of Safety

Factor on Embedment = > 1.5 (Ciria Report 104)
Factor on Moment & Shear = > 1.5 (BS 8002:1994)

GENERAL DATA:

Ultimate Bending Moment = 453.9 kN.m.

MATERIALS PROPERTY

Steel Beam Section = 457x191x74 KG/M.

Depth of Section (h) = 457 mm.
Width of Section (b) = 190.4 mm.
Web Thickness (s) = 9 mm.
Flange Thickness (t) = 14.5 mm.
Section Modulus = 1460 cm3.
Fy = 355 MPa.

SOLUTION

Required Section Modulus = 1278.59 cm3.

Provided Section Modulus = 1460 cm3.

GENERAL DATA:

Height of Panel = 1000 mm.

Width of Panel = 1950 mm.
Thickness of Panel = 100 mm.
Concrete Grade = 25 MPa.

CONCRETE COVER

φ of Main Reinforcement = 10 mm.

Nominal Cover = 25 mm.
Effective depth (dx) = 70 mm.
Effective depth (dy) = 60 mm.

Maximum Earth Pressure = 17.35 kN./m2.

Ultimate Bending Moment = wl2 / 8 (Assuming simply supported beam)
