Question 1
[5 marks]
b) Air is contained in a cylinder fitted with a frictionless piston. Initially, the cylinder
contains 0.5 m3 of air at 100 kPa and 30°C. The air is now compressed slowly with a
polytropic exponent of 1.3 until the volume is 0.25 m3.
i) calculate the work done for the process (kJ),
ii) calculate the final temperature of air (ºC)
iii) determine the total amount of heat transfer during the process (kJ),
iv) sketch and label the process on a P-V diagram clearly showing the states and the
direction of the process.
For air, take the gas constant, R=0.287 kJ/kgK and average specific heat,
cp=1.005 kJ/kgK and cv=0.718 kJ/kgK.

Question 2
a) Nozzle, Diffusers, Compressor and Turbine are commonly utilized in engineering
applications such as Power plant, Aircraft, Rocket propulsion etc.
i) what are the main functions of a compressor and a turbine?
ii) in a steady-flow diffuser, the value of properties (intensive or extensive)
does not change over time. TRUE or FALSE?
iii) for a steady-flow adiabatic nozzle, the heat loss is zero. TRUE or FALSE?
[5 marks]
a) Steam at superheated condition enters a turbine steadily at 5 MPa and 400 ºC with a
velocity of 40 m/s and leaves the turbine at 100 kPa with a quality of 95%. A heat loss
of 15 kJ/s occurs from the turbine during the process. The inlet and outlet area of the
turbine are 100 cm2 and 1200 cm2, respectively. Sketch the schematic diagram of the
process and determine,
i) the mass flow rate of water (kg/s),
ii) the exit velocity (m/s), and
iii) the power output of the turbine (MW).
