ZGE1109 Issues On The Heroism of DR Jose Rizal (Sebastian, Sherwin Benedict Y) PDF

This document discusses differing views on whether Jose Rizal should be considered a hero. Some authors argue he is not a hero since he did not directly participate in the revolution. However, others believe Rizal should still be considered a hero because he fought for his country through his writing, and died for the Philippines, demonstrating his heart for the nation even if he did not take up arms. The student reflects that while views differ on what defines heroism, Rizal can still be seen as depicting heroism through fighting with his pen rather than physically in the revolution.

DISCUSSION: ISSUES ON THE HEROISM OF DR JOSE RIZAL

REFLECTION
Looking at the sides of the four authors, I could state that all have valid points. For me,
it’s just a matter on how one person perceive heroism. Constantino and Malay have stated that
they are against Rizal on being a national hero, mainly because Rizal was not a part of the
revolution. In their point of view, heroism should refer to a man of bravery, someone who
valiantly fought for the motherland, and thus they rejected Rizal. However, Ocampo and Diokno
stated otherwise, they stated that Rizal should be the national hero because they view Rizal as
a perfect depiction of heroism, he may not have fought physically on the revolution, but he
fought using his pen. He fought and died his country. And I support their claim because Rizal’s
heroism shows us that fighting isn’t needed to show heroism, having a heart for the country is
enough.
