Let Us Pause and Reflect
Teaching English in the Elementary Grades (Language Arts) (English 101) is a three-
unit course which emphasizes English as a second language with main focus on language
teaching methodologies to improve knowledge on the structure and fluency in the English
language, and literacy skills, through listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing. It
consists of content-based lessons that will enhance the student’s skills along with the
application of various teaching strategies in teaching English, the use of ICT to facilitate the
teaching learning process and selecting, designing and organization of appropriate
assessment strategies. Demonstrating knowledge and skills on content and pedagogy
through lesson presentations is an important highlight of this course.
This material is subdivided into four parts: Module 1 (Prelim), Module 2 (Midterm),
Module 3 (Pre-final) and Module 4 (Final). Each module is comprised of lessons depending
on the topics as reflected in the syllabus.
For ease of study, each lesson is structured into segments. To prime students’
thinking, each lesson is presented with an introductory part. After which, they will deal with
the following parts:
Students should make sure that by the end of every lesson, they have achieved these
objectives.
To check on students’ background knowledge and tease their minds, they need to answer this
diagnostic test / pretest. In some lessons, this part serves as a review of previously discussed topic.
It is in this part that the required reading for content knowledge is presented. As pre-service
teachers, it is expected that education students should develop the habit of reading. Abraham Lincoln
once said, “A capacity, and taste, for reading gives access to whatever has already been discovered
by others.”
Remember this!
This part captures the key points of the lesson – the takeaways.
Lessons become meaningful only when it has to do something with ones’ experiences. It this
section, students are encouraged to reflect on how they can apply their learnings in their lives.
This part is included so that the teacher may know if the material
is suited to the level of the students. This serves as feedback
mechanism.
