Astronomy relevant to astrology

1. Topic : Introduction
Introduction to Astronomy - Astronomy is the science which deals with the heavenly bodies. Since
the man saw the Sun, the Moon, Stars etc., he wanted to find out the reason behind them and
how day and night, and seasons etc. occur. Thus started the astronomical concept in hismind.
In prehistoric times, our ancestors gazed at the Sun, the Moon and other heavenly bodies in the
sky and grouped the stars into constellations and rashis.

 Historical Background
 Ancient Astronomical Scholars (Indian & Western)
 Astronomical Treatises (Siddhantas)

2. Topic : 2 The Solar System సౌరమండలము

 Solar System - the collection of eight planets and their moons in orbit round the sun,
together with smaller bodies in the form of asteroids, meteoroids, and comets.
 Planets - A planet is a large, round object in space that moves around a star. The
Earth is planet.  eight celestial bodies, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,
and Neptune, that revolve around the sun in elliptical orbits

Astrology - any of the planets of the solar system, excluding the earth but including the sun
and moon, each thought to rule one or sometimes two signs of the zodiac

 Inner & Outer Planets - The inner planets Mercury, Venus, Earth . the outer planets,
Mars Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus  Neptune.and pluto
 Inferior & Superior Planets - Inner planets are inferior and outer planets are superior planets
 Extra-Saturnine Planets Uranus  Neptune.and pluto
3. Topic : 3 The Earth
 Earth – Facts
 Heliocentric & Geocentric - The word "helios" in Greek means
"sun." Heliocentric means that the sun is at the center. A heliocentric system is
one in which the planets revolve around a fixed sun. Thus Mercury, Venus, the
Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn all revolve around the sun. In the geocentric model
is a superseded description of the universe with Earth at the center. Under
the geocentric model, the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets all orbited Earth.
 Equator Northern & Southern Hemisphere - An imaginary circle on the surface of the
Earth, the latter being regarded as being cut by the plane through the centre of the Earth
perpendicular to the polar axis; it divides the Earth into the northern and southern
hemispheres, and is the primary circle from which terrestrial latitudes are measured
 North Pole & South Pole
 Inclination of Earth's Axis
 Pole Star or Dhruva Tara
4. Topic : The Moon
 Phases of Moon
 Moon's Nodes (Rahu & Ketu)

5. Topic : Eclipses
 Meaning of Eclipse
 Occultation
 Solar Eclipse (Total, Partial & Annular)
 Lunar Eclipse (Total, Partial & Penumbral)
 Role of Rahu & Ketu in eclipses
 Combustion
6. Topic : Zodiac
 Ecliptic (Ravi Marg)
 Zodiac
 Movable & Fixed Zodiac
 Tropical & Sidereal Zodiac
 Names of Zodiac Signs (Western & Hindu)

o Direct Motion
o Mandatara (Very Slow speed)
o Manda (Slow Speed)
o Sama (Normal Speed)
o Chara (Fast Speed)
o Atichara (Very Fast Speed)
o Stationary Motion Sthambana (Vikala)
o Retrograde Motion Vakra (Retrograde in same sign)
o Anuvakra (Retrograde & enters prev sign)
10. Topic : 10 Astronomical Coordinate System
 Terminology
o Terrestrial and Celestial Sphere
o Great and Small Circle
o Terrestrial and Celestial Equators
o Celestial Poles
o Meridian
o Longitude
o Latitude
